Check your display settings – it sounds like mirroring is turned on, and the DVI-HDMI connection will only support a small number of resolutions. like 1080×1920.

FWIW – this is not a good way to get a video output on a TV, as cheap an option as it seems – and you may have considerable problems with it, AS IT WILL NOT display a correct raster and image. I strongly recommend purchasing one of the cheap HDMI output options (Blackmagic Intensity springs to mind – very affordable) that is actually supported as a video output in FCP. You will be amazed by the difference.

You would do better to output TIFFs at the exact frame size you want to use them in FCP – SD or HD – no idea what your final output format is. Keep the dpi as 72 for any video work. This assumes you do not want to do any moves etc. in FCP.

However, I suspect that your comments about quality in FCP are not just to do with the scaling, it’s also to do with the fact that the canvas in FCP DOES NOT PLAY IN FULL QUALITY. Please look at the FAQs (link in menu bar above) – you need to view your project on a video monitor, not a computer one.

An image sequence can be turned into a quicktime by opening it in quicktime player (click on ‘open image sequence) – be sure to select the appropriate frame rate.

Once that is done, you can use Compressor to make this footage the appropriate size (SD or HD etc.) and a proper editing codec – I recommend ProRes for FCP use. This will ensure your footage plays nicely with FCP and fits with any other footage you may use – and easily outputs to DVD, Blu-Ray, tape etc…

As your footage was originated 4:2:0, it will always carry this limitation in chroma info, so the smoothing will probably help.

Rafael’s right – but you should also know that a non-intel machine will struggle with ProRes footage. I’d also do a render in the timeline before exporting the self contained QT movie, it always seems quicker to me – although I’ve never scientifically tested this.

Once in compressor, make sure you change the settings in the scaling tab to faster, as you are making 720 for Youtube, and don’t need Compressor’s full attention for this. It will make a big difference.

Enough power? Yes. But your storage is limited to FW800, or a more expensive solution with gigabit ethernet. You would also see a performance hit on Compressor – one of the few programmes that can use all 8-cores in a Mac Pro.

That said – a shared ethernet storage setup, with a few iMacs and some IOHD’s would be a great little facility. Trouble is – the extra cost of video devices compatible with iMacs removes the cost savings.

If your workflow is non-broadcast, web delivery or DV, it’s a great machine, and as ever is good value given the excellent displays.

I do think however, that if you want to reduce the number of misplaced posts in half you just need to put a large note at the top of the forum informing people about the basics forum. Alter your RT settings as suggested in the whitepaper for native playback – something like medium or low quality, with full framerate. Make sure external video is turned off.

If you are not experiencing smooth playback after encoding to prores, I would check your storage connection with a disk speedtest. An internal 3 disk array in your Mac Pro is cheaper and faster.

I just would not recommend using FCP for this kind of use. I THINK the video keyframing functions are in CS3 (I use CS4, but I don’t recall seeing it in the ‘new’ section).

If you have AE, have a look – it’s not that scary for what you want to do.
