New imac 27″ for FCS
Posted by Marten Benatar on November 26, 2009 at 9:54 amHello,
Is anyone considering, going to use or using the new intel Imac 27″ for Final Cut Studio? Is this model sufficient for FCS or would one be better off spending the money on a macpro tower?Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

November 26, 2009 at 10:56 amHi Marten,
The 27″ screen is really tempting, don’t you think so?
If you are working in DV, DV50, HDV or XDCAM and your work it doesn’t imply too many effects, layers etc, an iMAc may be a good solution. But the main problem I see with this kind of computers is that there is no way to expand or upgrade your hardware. Connexion are limited too.
So, buy an iMac only if you can not afford an Mac Pro, and if you are 100% sure that you won’t need more power for the next two or three years.
Cheers,

November 26, 2009 at 12:30 pmEnough power? Yes. But your storage is limited to FW800, or a more expensive solution with gigabit ethernet. You would also see a performance hit on Compressor – one of the few programmes that can use all 8-cores in a Mac Pro.
That said – a shared ethernet storage setup, with a few iMacs and some IOHD’s would be a great little facility. Trouble is – the extra cost of video devices compatible with iMacs removes the cost savings.
If your workflow is non-broadcast, web delivery or DV, it’s a great machine, and as ever is good value given the excellent displays.

Short Answer, the new 27″ iMac is well suited for all aspects of Studio and Adobe’s CS4. Lots of speed to do pretty much anything. We’re using it as one of our editing stations on a feature documentary that will be released in early 2010 which is connected to an ethernet SAN.
That being said, a Mac Pro desktop will outperform any iMac or MacBook Pro.
If you need to do a lot of rendering, the Mac Pro is the way to go.
