Sound can become distorted incoming to the camera via a mic, so it does not need to peak over on the recorded levels to be broken.
If what you’re previewing sounds distorted in fcp, it probably was recorded that way – and there’s little you can do. Listen to it via the headphone socket of your camera/deck to eliminate the Mac as a cause.
Can you get crystal clear sound? If it was recorded bad, then no – sorry.

Since you’re originating in DVCPro HD, I assume you’ve tried bringing it in in this (most excellent and space efficient) codec? It’s a good deal easier on the ol’ disks than uncompressed…
If it’s still freezing, your system is either not up to it, or your drives/interface are faulty.

Not a good reason to avoid Compressor Video encoding.”Yup. Got into this habit earlier in DVDSP2 when I used to have issues with builds failing (I suspected due to excessive bitrates in the mux) unless the audio was AC3 encoded. As a result, I never had this issue – and am a fan of compressor still.

OK – I don’t think I care enough about the hair-splitting tedium of capturing footage to get into that. Many professionals use many different workflows – let’s just leave it at that, m’kay?

Got to agree with Boyd, Walter. For a doco, many hours of available and searchable footage lends flexibility and creative freedom in the process – leading you in directions you would never have seen at the logging stage. For the Supercar Run I captured over 60 hours at DV res – then onlined later.
In many ways, this workflow is one of the most important creative changes wrought by NLE’s and large drives!

If you have to use iDVD, export your project to quick time as normal, re-import it to the project, and apple+9 it to tick the anamorphic box. Then drop it into a 4:3 sequence to create an instant letterboxed version. Export that sequence as QT (should be a quick process) and use that letterboxed version in iDVD.

In QT player pro, you need to change the video track properties to anamorphic dimensions to view your file correctly. It’s in >window>show movie properties>(highlight video track)>visual settings>(alter scaled size). Change the horizontal size (get the correct figure by multiplying the height by 16 and dividing by 9!). Amazed how many people don’t know this one…
Don’t know about iDVD, but DVDSP requires you to specify that the menu and individual tracks are 4:3 or 16:9. Have you done that?

I’ve had a couple of similar problems recently, one of which was SD and one HD… In one case it was exactly as you describe, with broken up audio on the timeline – and it’s obviously got nothing to do with sequence settings…
I fixed that one by starting a new timline in the project, after trashing the prefs. The second time I had to reinstall FCP, although it was on a system with a faulty video card, so…
I wonder if anyone else has seen this recently?
