Where did your project autosave files go? Are they on the Powerbook, or on the Lacie?
It looks likely that the project file is corrupted – and it probably happened when the system borked. You need to recover an autosaved version of the project. Often, by default, these autosaves go on the system drive – so you may have to recover it off the powerbook by whatever means necessary.
Usually, on a big project, I save multiple back-up versions of the project at different stages. After you’ve been burnt by this once, you realise how badly you can be messed up by one tiny little file.
Good luck.

November 3, 2006 at 2:15 pm in reply to: use a consumer HD LCD as Mac desktop screen with FCP??Walter’s right, computer monitor are set up for computer display, whereas HD LCD’s are set up for video.
That said, I run my Mac Mini via a Loewe HDTV – on a DVI to VGA adapter. Although it has an HDMI port, the computer looked soft and wrongly positioned via this port. the ‘lesser’ VGA connection looks pin sharp and I can adjust the screen position on the Loewe, although not the H/V Scale. Fortunately, on this set, that’s not a problem, the base of the dock is just visible.
However, this adjustment is not standard on all TV’s, so it may catch you out. Finally, despite a native resolution of 1336×768, the set only lets me input a max resolution of 1280×720 – pretty low for a 32″ screen. Even your 1920×1080 res (if it lets you do this via VGA) is pretty low compared to a big computer monitor.
If the screen only has a component or HDMI connection (ie no VGA) don’t touch it with a bargepole for this. HDMI is way too fussy for computer use.
Mostly I use this screen for front row and iPhoto – if you want a big screen for editing, and your budget is tight, go get yourself a Dell….

[Joe Murray] “EXPORT HDV movie. (it is a complex project so I don’t want to nest it – too slow)
RE-Import HDV Movies.
Paste HDV movie into PAL 8 (and/or 10) bit uncompressed timeline.
Render timeline and EXPORT PAL 8 (and/or 10) bit uncompressed MOVIE.
My reasoning for this is that if it is going to get heavily re-compressed for the DVD,
I should start with the best quality possible.”Joe, any workflow that involves exporting, reimporting, dropping into different timeline and re-exporting gains you nothing. You can’t improve the quality of the original, and every step you mention re-compresses and re-encodes the footage. I understand where you’re coming from – but it just won’t help. In fact, it’ll probably make it worse as the formats are so different.
Try encoding for DVD right off your HDV timeline – use the compressor pre-sets to do it.
Finally: Next to your HDV original, DVD Mpeg 2 BITE$. Don’t over-estimate how good you can ever make it look – it’s just rubbish ol’ Mpeg 😉

I think it’s fair to say that if you are careful with your media, in name, location and timecode, you should have few problems. It’s not faultless, but no off/online system is. Personally, I find it easy and trouble-free 90% of the time.

Lacie drive enclosures are rugged, however I have had problems with the firewire sockets on the D2 drives – they’re flimsy IMHO – and this may be very relevent for mobile use. FW800 seems a more rugged connector in general, so that may help. The Lacie drives themselves are excellent though – never lost data.
I can recommend G-Raid as well, very robust and reliable in my experience – I keep one with each system as a back-up array for SD work.
And for pity’s sake – get all that video off your internal drive!

Yup – Tom’s right, that’s the rough and ready EVS timelapse option. I have found that often doing the fast jog, then double speeding the resulting looped record gives a smoother look.
It’s very quick, but it never looks quite as good as a proper timelapse.

Well, there’s a multitude of options – everything you suggest is basically right. Some people try to avoid media manager as it’s a bit squirly with nests etc. – but it will allow you to only capture the media you actually need. I recommend (from personal experience) un-nesting the timeline if at all possible before going through this process.
Try duplicating the timelines, and altering the sequence settings to online. Then make the clips offline and recapture the media. Then relink each timeline in turn. Although they will all reference the same material, you’ll have to relink each one in turn. If the recaptured online media is correctly placed and named (vital here) you should be fine.
It’s commonplace, in my experience, for some of the media to need reconnecting manually – but it’s pretty quick. Finally, check it all through thoroughly before rendering – it’s not totally foolproof in every case.

If the timelines all access the same material, and if you recapture the material at online quality (making sure you blow away the offline captures) you can reconnect each timeline in turn to the same material. Since the offlines were all created with reference to the same material, I can’t see a problem.

I was shown the above at IBC – it seems a comprehensive solution for what you want to do, although I cannot personally vouch for it, they seemed keen to demo kit, so try it.
I think you are correct about the AJA box – it only goes the other way. I think you may find other solutions by googling ‘scan converter’ and ‘SDI’. I seem to remember Snell and Wilcox have one, probably expensive….

1) Capturung AVI is not, under any circumstances, a workflow for FCP. You need to capture some type of quicktime, preferably the same codec you are editing with – otherwise you’re not freeing up your edit system. If you need a seperate capture system, and it’s not DV capture, get a lower spec mac pro.
2) QT player does not have all the codecs for playback that FCP does. Install FCP on your system at home if you can.
