Smeared? Do you mean that some frames are incomplete, with the same line repeated all the way down from a certain point?
If so, it’s an IO problem, and could be the card or the disk array – sorry not to be more specific, but you’ll need to try removing components and isolating the problem. Try using the card to capture DV of some flavour to a FW drive…

We have had the EXACT same problem as you describe with a Medea RT3X and Atto UL4D card. The array has been back to the US to be checked and firmware updated – it came back with a clear bill of health, but the problem reoccured on a recent job.
I am not in a position to give firmware/driver info as I am at home on paternity leave (second son!) but I will try to find out.
PLEASE post further on this topic – we have been scratching our heads for 18 months. Again, with FW800 or our Huge array, no problems.

There are not many professional editors who would advocate a laptop as a main machine for edit work. I can see the appeal, especially with the travelling, but a desktop will give you an upgradeable, more powerful system that you can plug a decent graphics card into, faster and bigger disk arrays (including a huge internal array), multiple monitors etc etc.
That’s before you consider what happens if something goes wrong, and you have to swap out a system drive….
If you make a living out of this and you work in DV, get the ‘basic’ spec Mac Pro and a Macbook for the road when you can afford it.

November 7, 2006 at 9:39 pm in reply to: dupplicated frames after importing footage in FCPSounds very much like your timeline has the wrong frame rate, or your material.
Check your sequence settings.

And it’s free! How good is that…..
I think there’s a filter that does multi-screen layouts, just can’t remember what it is, but it’s been posted about here may times before.

John – there’s certainly a few quirks in FCP, and a few bugs for sure – Broadcast Safe is as much of a mystery to me as it is to everyone else – but it’s also the case that some of the problems you’ve described are down to your method. Your mention of using Easy Setup, in a situation where it just should never have been used, serves as a reminder to all of us that some times FCP bites us because we didn’t play with it nice – not because it doesn’t work properly.
Every day I find something in FCP that I haven’t tried before, and most of the time it trips me up – but it’s usually me, not the system.
Just a friendly observation – I hate to see someone so at odds with something you obviously use every day to, like, make a living and stuff. Workarounds and tried and tested methods are the stuff of all software, but I think FCP is more foolproof than most…
Wishing you a better day tomorrow.

Hey – be grateful you don’t live in the UK, and face overwhelming voter apathy as a result of being forced to choose between two basically incompetent, corrupt, self serving parties neither of whom are worth….
oh wait.

I agree that FCP is twitchy with regard to re-rendering, sometimes it frustrates me that razoring a clip to a certain length requires the whole clip to be re-rendered, whereas dragging the end of the clip in to the same point doesn’t require it to be rendered at all…
However, you could probably have avoided this re-rendering if a) you hadn’t altered the easy setup – you only needed to change the capture preset to HDV and b) you used the ‘undo’ key when you get this issue. Now, I can’t guarantee that Undo would have worked here, but it works in 95% of circumstances that lead to red render bars.
Let’s be clear about one thing though, capturing some HDV and dropping it into a timeline using a different codec will not cause the entire timeline to go unrendered – in my experience anyway. This should only happen if you change the sequence settings (which does not happen when you use an Easy Setup – this only effects sequences opened AFTER the setup is activated). However, since the HDV easy setup changes the A/V settings, including the device used for video output to firewire video, it may be that FCP requires the timeline to be re-rendered to accomodate this different external video device. At any rate, the method used here is equally likely to be the problem as the software you are arguing with.
HDV is a tricky little codec – and this could easily be a bug. Let us know how you get on. I would say that my own relationship with FCP has been like a marriage: The giddy euphoria of the early days together, leading to frustration and refusal to compromise when we started to find each other’s idiosyncracies and limitations – leading to a long, happy period of co-existance.

I can only offer general help, as I don’t know the exact deck, but you seem to be fundementally misunderstanding the use of genlock here.
The genlock on the decklink card is a genlock in, which is only useful if you want to lock the Mac output to a larger system, such as a post facility router. The deck will lock ref to input video when it records anyway, and again only uses genlock to time playback into another system.
You do not need to use any genlock connections here – the record will work fine without it. It may well be that connecting up genlock as you suggest has caused the problem. Try without it, and just connect the SDI video out on the decklink card to the SDI video in on the deck.

Please – get some help in for this. Throwing this together with no experience of HD post will not work. In a thousand years. Get a good reseller – quick – who can build you a system, or massively upgrade yours. It ain’t cheap and it ain’t simple.
