  • Digitizing HD CAM footage?

Posted by Liammorgan on November 4, 2006 at 12:36 pm

I’m wondering if I need some kind of special capture card to digitize HDCAM footage from a camera. I’ve never used this format before and the camera is only going to be around for four days (shooting in the day, capturing in the night) before it goes back to Oz. into a g5 quad. sugestions? Cheers!

You will need to purchase a HD Capture card like the Kona 3, Kona LH or Decklink Extreme HD. I am not sure what connections the camera has, or if it has deck control, but I do know that it doesn’t capture via firewire. HD capture card only.

As Shane notes, you’ll need a capture card like the AJA Kona series and a very fast hard drive array. Uncompressed HD will require something like a Fibre Channel array, you’ll want speeds around 200 – 300mb/sec or faster.

I would suggest renting an HDCAM deck for your capture.

ahh, I see. So once I’ve got those bits of hardware, how do I set up to capture that? it is one of the HD capture presets right, or will I have to change things deeper down? or does it depend on what I want? Thanks for the help guys.

You really need to do some research before you jump into this. I spent 6 months developing the HD Post Production workflow for Good Eats before we edited our first complete show. Color Correction, Frame Rates, Delivery, etc…. are all issues that are very different from SD. You’re going to need to understand exactly what you want to capture, how you plan to edit it and how you plan to master it out.

If you’ve never dealt with high speed storage or an HD system before, have a VAR put it together for you. Lots of pitfalls in setting up a system correctly and I would highly recommend fibre channel storage. http://www.promax.com is excellent and here on the east coast, WH Platts is excellent. http://www.whplatts.com

I second, third and fourth to Walter’s responce.

As with any project, DV, SD, HD, please do your research and get educated.

Yea, I wish I had more time and someone who really knew what they were doing, unfortunatly I’m in qatar and such things don’t exist. I’ve just come into a very unorganized project and I’ve got people asking me questions about this stuff so here I am trying to answer (I’m actually a cameraman, post isn’t really what I know…). But thanks for your help.

Qatar? And you have the camera for 4 days…

How are you going to get an HD capture card, high speed drive array and the knowledge needed to capture this footage in this amount of time…in Qatar?
