November 18, 2006 at 8:44 pm in reply to: Outputting to tape – Stereo or Dual Mono?

    [kkajino] “Are these the same?:

    1. Sequence setup is stereo, and Lt is panned all the way left and Rt is panned right in the audio mixer.

    2. Sequence setup is dual mono.

It depends if the pans are set-up so that A1 is panned all the way left and A2 is panned right in 2) or if they are still noth centered. The advantage of using stereo is that the panning is done for you. If you select a dual mono setup, by default FCP will mix both tracks on the output, as you would if you were working in a mono setup.

You were supplied stereo, so select stereo….

November 18, 2006 at 8:39 pm in reply to: widescreen 16:9 help needed

    You will need to specifiy:

    1) That the sequence is anamorphic – using the check box in the sequence settings

    and if this is correct:

    2) That the item properties for each layer are anamorphic (assuming they actually are) by selecting them and hitting Apple+9 and checking the anamorphic box.

If the source material is not anamorhic 16:9 you will need to either zoom it to fit (using the motion > scale setting) or change the aspect ratio to fit.

It sounds like you are trying to put 16:9 elements into a 4:3 sequence – so 1) should fix it, but you will need to start with a blank 16:9 sequence before you place the footage.

Not sure I understand your problem here – you copy the clip with the CC in (assuming it contains no other filters – if so delete them temporarily or copy them elsewhere for the moment) then highlight every other clip in the sequence, then command click and select paste attributes > filters.

It sounds like you know all this – so what’s the hitch?

What version? Upgrading from 5.0.x to 5.1.x requires a crossgrade via disk.

    Have you tried software update?

Be tempted just to use a circular matte and keyframe the position over the face – instead of the 8-point GM. Be a lot quicker to prep and render.

[walter biscardi] “ATTO Fibre cards are the last of the items I’ve heard with 2GB limits and that’s only for desktops.”

ok – good to know – thought it was a wider issue still.

Still not sure I expect to see enough of a performance gain most of the time to shell out for a 2gb stick – pricey… But point taken. At the end of the day, it’s a laptop system, so if I need that much power, I’ll fire up something a little more quad-dy…

November 15, 2006 at 11:59 am in reply to: converting iTunes mpg4 to aiff

Isn’t the hack here to use iMovie, which will use mp4’s? In fact someone wrote an Apple Script using iMovie to convert their DRM’ed songs automatically using this. Export a QT from it to use in FCP. It’s so simple it makes a mockery of FCP’s refusal to accept them – what’s the point really?

Could we just have this discussion once without someone mentioning piracy/copyright etc? There are a ton of reasons you may legally be able to do this – I use my music library on the road to supply tracks for broadcast under blanket agreements. Use of music in off-lines is a grey area, but has been done in feature film work forever. I think we’re all adult enough to know where the lines are drawn – and you better know your own country’s laws…

Mine is on the way with 2Gb – hard to see any justification for 3Gb – especially as 5.1 does not play nice with more than 2Gb when used with certain external devices.
