  • Outputting to tape – Stereo or Dual Mono?

Posted by Kent Kajino on November 18, 2006 at 10:13 am

I received two separate audio files from my sound mixer, Stereo Left and Stereo Right.
Should I use these as a stereo pair, or am I supposed to treat these as dual mono tracks (-3db each) to be output to ch1 and ch2?
I’ll ask the audio person tomorrow, but if anyone had a quick answer, I would really appreciate it.

It simply doesn’t matter as far as the mix goes.
Check the output level and go with whichever is correct.

If one is the stereo right, and panned right, and the other is stereo left, and panned left. Outputting dual mono is the way to go.

    Are these the same?:

    1. Sequence setup is stereo, and Lt is panned all the way left and Rt is panned right in the audio mixer.

    2. Sequence setup is dual mono.

It depends if the pans are set-up so that A1 is panned all the way left and A2 is panned right in 2) or if they are still noth centered. The advantage of using stereo is that the panning is done for you. If you select a dual mono setup, by default FCP will mix both tracks on the output, as you would if you were working in a mono setup.

You were supplied stereo, so select stereo….
