converting iTunes mpg4 to aiff
Posted by Jack Entonces on November 15, 2006 at 1:04 amSo I purchased a song from iTunes as .m4p,
and later found out that Final Cut Pro doesn’t like .m4p files.
so I go to Preferences, Advance, Importing, and set it to AIFF Encoder,
Custom, 48k, etc.I purchase the same song again, and AGAIN it is downloaded as .m4p.
Can someone please tell me how can i convert my m4p audio file from iTunes,
into a FCP friendly AIFF audio file?
Thank you.Paul Bosch replied 17 years, 9 months ago 9 Members · 10 Replies -

November 15, 2006 at 1:16 amPurchased songs from iTunes cannot be converted. They are encoded with DRM (Digital Rights Management) that prevents this.
You can use these songs in iMovie, but not FCP. Because iMovie is a consumer application and FCP is a professional one. To use a song in a professional project you need to acquire the rights to it.

November 15, 2006 at 4:31 amNot that I endorse stealing, but the trick is to burn a cd, then simply use the file off the cd.

November 15, 2006 at 4:53 amTry making the iTunes preference changes you mentioned and then under the iTunes App ADVANCED pull down menu, choose Convert Selecetion to “user setting”.
If this does not work, you might have to burn a CD and then re-import the music files.

November 15, 2006 at 9:23 amNot everyone wanting to use music from their itunes library is wanting to “steal” music…..there are legitimate uses for this.
I often will use a song from itunes as a guidetrack that will later be replaced with specially commissioned music that follows a similar tempo or style.
Let’s not jump to the conclusion that anyone wanting to know info like this is automatically a pirate!

November 15, 2006 at 11:59 amIsn’t the hack here to use iMovie, which will use mp4’s? In fact someone wrote an Apple Script using iMovie to convert their DRM’ed songs automatically using this. Export a QT from it to use in FCP. It’s so simple it makes a mockery of FCP’s refusal to accept them – what’s the point really?
Could we just have this discussion once without someone mentioning piracy/copyright etc? There are a ton of reasons you may legally be able to do this – I use my music library on the road to supply tracks for broadcast under blanket agreements. Use of music in off-lines is a grey area, but has been done in feature film work forever. I think we’re all adult enough to know where the lines are drawn – and you better know your own country’s laws…

July 15, 2008 at 4:04 pmI have purchased music tracks from itunes, but now cannot use them in FCP (they downloaded as m4p files, and when I import them to FCP, they come in as blank tracks.)
I then tried burning a cd from itunes, and then taking the files off the cd and putting them directly in my FCP capture folder, and then converting to AIFF. But the files that are mp4 again come in as blank tracks, both before and after conversion.
In this thread, someone mentioned using i-movie..I tried that…but it didn’t seem to work.
I also tried converting them IN Itunes as someone suggested, but that didn’t work.
I also tried changing my import settings in i-tunes to AIFF and RE-importing the music from a cd I had burned….that didn’t work.
This is really frustrating. I’m not trying to pirate, just use the tracks as audio guides for my composer and clients.
Are there any other ideas?
Thanks so much for any help! -

That is what you need to do. And make sure that they are 48kHz, 16 bit stereo. And that you are grabbing the RIGHT ONES. Make sure they say .aif at the end. When I convert I have two copies in iTunes and I cannot tell which is which, until I drag one out and onto the desktop.
If you drag an AIFF into a project and it sees it as an m4p, then something is wrong with FCP. You might need to empty some cache somewhere so that it sees it properly. I wish I knew which one.

July 15, 2008 at 7:01 pmI WORKED!
After your message Shane, I went back to I-Tunes.I realized I had been burning a data cd, not a music cd. So my files were still burning as m4p.
I changed the I-Tunes preferences for “burning” to music cd, and then the I-Tunes preferences for “import” to AIFF, 48/16bit.
I burned a cd, then re-imported the music into I-Tunes. (Now it automatically changes the files to AIFF) Then I dragged each song from I-Tunes into a folder on my desktop. I checked that they were each the AIFF copy, not the m4p version that is still in I-tunes. Shane you are right, you can’t tell, you just see duplicate songs.
Then I dragged that desktop folder into my external hardrive where I’m storing my FCP capture files. Then I imported the folder into FCP. And it’s all good!Sorry to be so explanatory..but hopefully this helps someone else.
I should have come to creative cow first, before spending hours trying to search the manual and figure this out. Thanks Shane for helping out!
