Just had a look at the Jucelink website and it does not look like the juicedLink CX231 or the non phantom power version has headphone socket. So I guess its the Beacchtek one.

Looks really nice but costs around the same as the camera;). The other two are both around $300. If I need something top end I would hire. Just for my own projects/non broadcast.
I know the original Betchbox was used by the BBC so I am inclined to go for the beatchtek solution.

In terms of any 2 drives failing and not loosing any data I think this is incorrect (it was info from a support chat with Startech). With RAID 10 2 drives can fail and you do not always loose any data but if the 2 drives are in the same mirror I think you loose all or some.
What I had issue with was that RAID 10 is the same speed as a single drive. The 0 in raid 10 (it is in fact 1+0) is striping so it is faster. It is not as fast as raid 5 (in most cases) but it is faster than a single disc.
I ended up deciding to go for RAID 5. Although RAID 10 is a little more secure (loosing 2 or 4 does not always mean you loose data) RAID 5 does give you more storage.
One of the main factors is that you do not want to get lulled into a false seance of security. If it is really important data you should have it on another drive (preferebly off site). There is also the danger that your RAID array goes bang and takes out all the drives or that there is a fire/flood etc.

My main concern is not loosing anything, drives are dirt cheap (2TB under $100).
My question was about using 4 drives, not 6. Thats what I have. It is a personal storage system for video editing.
If I go for RAID 10 I am striping so why are you saying it will be as slow as a single drive (not that that matters to me).
There seems to be a general condenses that RAID 10 very secure and performant.

I would imagine it would need to run on the MacBook and I think your Mac Pro will be at least as powerful so hopefully.
However I think Apple may be hoping to sell new hardware and this may be why it is so cheap. The most powerful MacBook seems to be Quad Intel 2.3 so fingers crossed.

FCP7 already does this, you can mix DV and HDV on the timeline without transcoding or rendering. It just works. Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier (and I think Lightworks and Avid) have been doing this for years.
I guess you can still transcode into ProRes if you want but I am not sure if there is any point (I guess proxy files may still be relevant).
Basically as an editor you simply don’t have to worry about it, just import all the footage and start cutting. Apple have done a great job of evangelizing ProRes but it partly existed as apple were behind the field in terms of being able to use modern formats nationally (of course this is not how they spun it).
I think one of the problems is that Apple are so good at marketing when the trouth comes out it can confuse the congregation at the church of apple;). I have come across people who swear blind that FCP is 1000* better than Vegas in every respect when they have never even seen Vagas;). Its kind of odd that apple is always 1000* better, never twice as good;).

In terms of Studio hopefully FCP X will integrate with existing programs or they will launch updates very soon. I would imagine the whole of studio would still be expensive – basically they may be trying to get people hooked with FCP and then hopefully people would go for the whole ecosystem.
In some ways the low pricing is quite cunning and may partially be due to them potentially making lots of money on hardware if people switch to Mac. The true cost of an editing system is SW+HW and as Apple provide both they may be able to afford to subsidise the SW.
One question I have is what will the minimum sensible spec be. I know there are quad core laptops out there so maybe it will be quad core.
The other thing I am wondering is how will dual monitor work. I tend to have bins on one monitor and everything else on the 2nd (I have a blackmagic which outputs to CRT video monitor). What would be really cool is to use the Sony Vegas model. It allows panels to be ripped off and put on the second monitor as floating windows (and docked together in tabbed sets).

Just a few thoughts. On the iMovie look partly we are saying more is done with the mouse than used to be. Although up to a point keyboard shortcuts are the holy gravel (Avid certainly used to have things that were only available thought them) there are things that it is quickest or easier to do with the mouse. I realised this when I started using Sony Vegas. Basically we have got into a ludite mindset that does not see the potential (in terms of productivity) in fully exploiting a GUI interface.
The question we should be asking is does it allow us to cut as quickly as Lightworks. [tangent] And on the Lightworks front I realised a cool trick it had up its sleeve in terms of keyboard shortcuts (apologies for tangent). You can define any key as a function key. So as well as Alt/Ctl/Apple/Windows…. you can also define a letter as a function key (bear with me). This means that you can set things up so V is a function key to toggle video tracks. So you hold down V and tap 1-9 to toggle video tracked 1-9. I find this a lot easier to remember than Ctl 1-9 CTL is arbitory, V for Video makes sense. [tangent] Anyway back to the main flow.
In terms of 3td party plugins they almost certainly will not work. Not because we are going from 7 to X but because we are going from 32 to 64 bit. At the very lease the vendors will have to recompile the 64bit versions.

I went into Qmaster and set to compressor Service to have 2 instances (I am Quad core). I submitted to the Clistername I had set up. It looks like everything work except CPU usage is even lower and it does not seem to be creating any output files.
Any idea what Iam doing wrong?
