You can’t change the firewire signal, no — it outputs the same as what you’re shooting.
As of yet there is no DV Rack type of program for DVCPRO-HD. I’ve been lobbying Serious Magic heavily to make a DVCPRO-HD-compatible version of DV Rack; maybe if more people ask for it they’ll move it higher up their priority list.

Yes you can shoot native 16×9 DV to tape, and you can also shoot 4×3 DV to tape. Both modes support 24p, 30p, and 60i recording.

There is no auto level control on the HVX or the DVX. It’s all manual, all the time. There is a limiter (which they call “ALC” but which stands for automatic limiter control, not automatic level control) but that’s it. No auto level control.

Go into the menus and change the settings from REGEN to TC PRESET. That way timecode will continue forward from one tape to the next; wherever you last left off, that’s where the next shot will begin.
You may want to manually go in and reset the timecode at the beginning of each tape, to something like 01:00:00:00, and 02:00:00:00, etc. You don’t have to, but you may want to.

All I’m saying is go into it with your eyes open, and allocate as much headroom as you think you’ll need. Each red dot represents 2dB of volume, so if you stay completely out of the red, you’re limiting your maximum volume to 1/4 of what the system could be recording if you used all the dynamic range.

I posted a long thread on focusing on another forum, but it comes down to this:
No matter how sharp the LCD is or isn’t, you simply cannot judge focus on a 2-million pixel frame by viewing it on a 200,000 pixel LCD. It’s simply impossible. You HAVE to use other focusing aids.
The HVX offers three. First, put on the EVF DTL and never take it off. That’s the bare minimum you should be doing.
Second, use the magnified focus assist. That helps enormously, and those two alone (EVF DTL and Focus Assist) have been enough to get us through several shoots where no monitor was available, and the footage was always tack sharp.
Third, use the distance readout. Measure from the front of the lens, and the distance readout in the viewfinder is quite accurate. Recently we’ve been using a laser measurer (note: NOT an ultrasonic measurer!) and getting pinpoint focus precision that way.

It’s interesting technology from a programmer’s perspective, but as a practical system? No way. DV tape is for video, and the hardware has built-in error correction if there’s a fault. Well, that error correction may help mask errors in video data, but it’d be disastrous in data data.
The only prayer you’d have of making a successful backup would be to back up twice on the same tape. That drops your effective data size to around six GB per tape. Which would you rather do: spend an hour to back up 6GB of data on a $5 tape, or spend 10 minutes backup up 4.7GB of data on a 50-cent DVD-R? No matter how you slice it, backing up to DV tape is extremely expensive and slow and inherently unreliable, because the deck was never designed for that job.

No audio is recorded at all when shooting at variable speeds.
And yes, the CCD is reclocked and scans at the frame rate dictated in the FRAME RATE menu option.

Toke’s point was that the FX1’s lens wasn’t interchangeable either, but Matteo sliced the lens off his FX1 and mounted a broadcast lens anyway… 🙂
