editing with FCP on Intel Mac
Posted by Peter Carroll on March 29, 2006 at 3:13 pmI will be editing HD footage from an HVX 200 using FCP 5.04 on a new Mac with Intel chip. I have heard that the new Intel Macs are not optimized for latest version of Final Cut Pro and you’re better off using an older Mac. Any thoughts?
Thanks!

March 29, 2006 at 3:40 pmYes, FCP 5.0.4 does not run at it’s native speed on intel macs. I haven’t used it, but I would imagine it would be quite a performance hit. But, you are in luck, the new Universal FCP Studio (with FCP 5.1) was just released. Here’s info on how to crossgrade for $49 to the new version: https://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/
That said, if you are not the kind of person who likes to discover the new bugs and quirks of the latest and greatest, I would recomend using FCP 5.0.4 on a G5 mac instead.

March 30, 2006 at 1:39 pmCan you guys clear something up for me? The Final Cut Studio 5.1 page lists “Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later” as a requirement, but the OS X page says that 10.4.3 is the current version. Will we even be able to run FCS when it arrives?

March 30, 2006 at 5:04 pmPlease disregard my question about the OS X version. I didn’t realize you can download an update that brings you to 10.4.5.

March 30, 2006 at 5:23 pm10.4.3 is the version you get when you buy the Tiger install disks and maybe it’s what ships with a new MacBook.
Software updates will update you from then on.
