Well, hmm, I hadn’t encountered that usage of the terminology; normally pulldown is referencing how progressive frames (or film frames) get transferred to interlaced video. What it does in 720/25p mode is duplicate each frame. Each frame gets written twice. But it’s progressive-scan, so there’s no field-blending going on.I guess the terminology works just as well, I just hadn’t heard it applied to progressive like that before. If you think about it as the pulldown nomenclature (i.e., 2:3 or 2:2) referring to how many frames (or fields) each pair of frames gets written to, then it makes sense. As in, you have an A & B frame pair; in 2:3 pulldown the “A” frame gets written to two fields and the “B” frame gets written to 3 fields, so it’s A:B => 2:3, A=>2 and B=>3. In 720p there are no fields, so it’d be referencing frame duplication, but even then it could work: A:B => 2:2, so A=>2 frames and B=>2 frames. And that’s how 720/25p does get mapped into a 720/50p data stream, so yeah, that terminology still works.

Absolutely not! It’s a bug in MacOS, and you’re not the only one to be hit by it. This issue only ever happens on Macs, and so far we don’t really know what causes it. However, I strongly advise that you write-protect your cards before putting them in a Mac. Doing so has apparently made the problem go away for many users.
The footage is good on the cards, it’s just the copying-to-the-Mac process that somehow glitches. Write-protect your cards and it might go away.

Have you installed the drivers from the CD that came with the HVX? Without the drivers installed, the Mac won’t see the camera. No, that’s not really it. It’s referring to 1080/50i, where each frame gets written to 2 fields of video, and the next frame also gets written to 2 fields (compare that with 2:3 pulldown for NTSC 24P, where each even frame gets written to 2 fields, and each odd frame gets written to three fields).

If you record in 720/25pN mode, you can take full advantage of the variable frame rates.
If you want to use the 720/50p mode, you can’t currently edit that in FCP, but you could in EDIUS Broadcast 4.0.

Further, the US version does 24P/30P/60i. The PAL version does 25P/50i. There is no one version of the camera that does both 25P and 30P.

Any remote that works for a DVX will also work with an HVX.
The earlier versions of the DVX didn’t provide for remote iris and focus, but the DVX100B does, and the HVX does. So if you get a remote that says it’ll support record start-stop/iris/focus/zoom for the DVX100B, it’ll also work for the HVX200.

You definitely have a problem, but I don’t know how to address it; I’m not a Mac user. On the PC, a direct card copy takes about 5:15 for an 8GB card. From the P2 Store it’s slower, but no more than 8 minutes. You should check to make sure that you’re not connecting to a USB1 port, or that there aren’t any USB1 devices in the chain…

If it’s taking any more than 4 minutes to offload a 4-gig partition, you’ve got a problem somewhere in your system.

For clarity’s sake, no, the FS-100 doesn’t. You cannot put the camera in 24pN mode and expect data to come out the firewire port.
What the FireStore does now (in version 3.0) is simulate 24pN recording. Your HVX is still put in 720/24p mode (all 100 megabits), and the FireStore reads the incoming data stream and discards any duplicate frames, thus recording only the flagged frames (which is what the camera does internally when in pN mode).
But if you put an HVX in pN mode and try to connect a FireStore to it, you’ll get flat nothin’. The FS-100 can only record if the HVX is *not* in pN mode. The FS-100 v3.0 has the ability to simulate pN, just like FCP and EDIUS and DV Rack 2.0 HD all can.

Three of the major US broadcasters are broadcasting 720p; the others are mainly broadcasting 1080i. Overall the market is something like 75% 1080i, 25% 720p. HVX lets you do both; pick the format that’s appropriate for the job you’re shooting.
1080/24p is better than 720/24p. 1080/30p is better than 720/30p. 720/60p is better than 1080/60i. But 720pN takes up half (or less than half) the storage space of 1080, so that has to be a factor.
For ultimate resolution and smoothest compression, 1080/24p or 1080/30p is my first choice. For best “reality” motion rendering, 720/60p is better than 1080/60i. For variable frame rates, you have to use 720.
