    SYSTEM:

Dual 2 Ghz Power PC G5 (Power Mac 7.3
    2.5 GB DDR SDRAM
    Kona 3X Version 3.3
    OS X 10.4.9
    FCP 5.1.4
    QuickTime 7.1.5
    6.2 TB X-Serve Raid
    Controlled by FiberShare 3.0

When I am playing down P2 footage I am having a real problem with digital artifacting, with large square green, or scrambled squares coming up. These are not in the footage itself, but will jump around in the media. These also seem to cause FCP to drop frames. In addition when I go to export it will give me an I/O error. I try again and the clip exports fine, without a single glitch. Is there any way to solve this issue? Is this inherant to P2 Files. I should mention that this footage was shot on an HVX at 59.94 and captured to a Firestore running software Version 2.0. There is also one error that seems to be consistant. When I go double time through the footage and then stop and play at normal speed, it will play for a second, then go to black for a second, and then come back. It is not dropping frames exactly, becuase it is not throwing up a dropout message, but it does this drop to black everytime I do this. Of course if I reverse and play over the same section it no longer does it. Anyone got any advice?

[Dylan Thuras] “Is this inherant to P2 Files”

Absolutely not! It’s a bug in MacOS, and you’re not the only one to be hit by it. This issue only ever happens on Macs, and so far we don’t really know what causes it. However, I strongly advise that you write-protect your cards before putting them in a Mac. Doing so has apparently made the problem go away for many users.

The footage is good on the cards, it’s just the copying-to-the-Mac process that somehow glitches. Write-protect your cards and it might go away.

Uhg. Yeah, the cards were in fact Write-Protected on ingestion of the footage, however quite a bit of the footage was captured with the Firestore which write protection doesn’t apply to.

Do you have the latest firmware on your Firestore? Have heard of problems with it before..

Early versions of the FireStore did cause that exact issue, yes. Make sure you’re running the last free update, or that you’ve updated to 3.0.

I’d say it’s more the Firestore than the Mac. I’ve never seen any of that and I shoot every week… but then I will not use the Firestore…

I use to have the same problems with cards until I did a camera upgrade (I have one of the first ones). I never had that problem with my Firestore and it was one of the first ones also. I am on version 3,0 of the firestore and I love not having to convert to QT. I also get about 240 minutes from it.

I have to agree with Douglas. Especially with the new 3.01 upgrade, working with the FS-100 is seamless, painless and flawless. Recording to Quicktime files has cut my studio editing time in half, and the footage looks awesome. I will never go back to using the expensive P2s!
