[NorbCC] “I recently shot an indie film on the Sony900 at 24p and would like some post workflow advice. “
Not for nothing, but shouldn’t you have asked these questions before you shot? Because if you had, you might have found it made more sense to simply shoot in DVCPro HD if you were planning to post in that format. Or you could have explored different budget options for post & budgeted accordingly so that you could have enough storage to post (or at least online) in HDCam.
BTW, you don’t specifically need an X-Raid to work with HDCam. You can use any number of fiber channel, ultra 32 SCSI, or even SATA raid options.

[Joshua Lim] “i am trying to sync my 24fps dailies with my audio with the merge clip function but everytime i do it, the merged clip always has an audio track that starts much later than what i wanted.”
Yup, that’s the way it works. Your merged clip will have beginning & end points to match the longest parts of your media (remember, it’s merged!), & the in & out points will match whatever the in & outs were at the time you merged the clip. If you want the media start & end to match something else, you’ll have to either create sublcips or export them to make new clips. You may or man not have issues using the Media Manager later on if you choose this workflow.
Personally, I don'[t bother merging clips. I make a time line for each camera roll, sort my logged clips by timecode start & throw them all in at once. Then I synch the sound to each clip & when I need to add one to a timeline, I just cut & paste the synched, but independent clips from the synch timeline to the editing timeline. Voila! Your milage may vary.

December 20, 2005 at 6:44 pm in reply to: Assemble Edit FCP&SonyDSR25- I need help to write timecode from fcp timeline to DVCAM tape[Dennis] “As soon as FCP hits the in point on the tape, it writes an unrelated timecode to the tape, and pauses itself, not completing the task. I don’t understand what’s going on with this…anybody?”
That’s because you have the deck set to accept external TC. It should be set to internal.

December 20, 2005 at 6:33 pm in reply to: Still having a problem with dropped framesDropped frames are always a matter of your drives not being fast enough. There may be any number of reasons why, like them being to full, or that you’re trying to use your system drive, or that you’ve got 14 firewire drives daisy-chained to a camcorder, etc.
[jmf] “How exact do I play it from the timeline”
This is in the manual.
[jmf] “what do I use for countdown and slate?”
You lay color bars, slate & countdown into your timeline. Which is how I usually do it, anyway, when I lay off to tape.

Have you thought of looking the specs up on the FCP pages at apple.com? I’m pretty sure those specs are posted there.

It’s possible that the dub house used 32k audio, even though there are only 2 channels. You may want to speak to them about this.
FCP can automatically upsample the audio to 48k on capture, & it sounds like that’s what you’ve got it set up to do. I assume that you’re going to online from the original HD tapes. If so, don’t worry too much about it, since you can re-capture the original audio at that time, too. Unless, of course, you were planning on sending the audio out for final mix before you online, in which case you may need to have new dubs made, or find another workaround for the audio.
