You can use MpegStreamclip to unwrap & transcode .mts files. Then use compressor to cross convert from 720 to 1080.

I think you should run some tests and see which works best for you under what circumstances. Shoot some charts, shoot some complex scenes, shoot some fast motion, shoot something bright, shoot something dark.

You may want to rent a deck and charge it back to the client. Or, have them digitize the tapes into their Avid, then export either 10-bit DNxHD or an image sequence. You can download the Avid codecs directly from the Avid website.

If it was me, I’d call the producer and say: “the file you sent us is incompatible with our software. Please send me a .wav or .aiff file. We cannot work with any other audio, as it will be of too poor quality for your high standards.”
When they say, “But it plays fine for me”, I repeat my request.

Depending on your graphics card, Motion is limited to 2k or 4k. AFAIK, there’s no limit in Shake.

Try it. I’m pretty, though, that FCP has a limit of 4096 pixels in either direction.
AE should be able to work with that size, though.
Is this for some kind of video wall? If so, you might try to do an “offline” at a smaller resolution that FCP will understand, then “online” in AE.

Hold on, let me check my copy of the Geneva Convention. 😉
I might try scaling in AE or Motion. You should run some tests. Your options are to either scale all the footage before hand, or just wait until you lock picture & then scale only what you’re using.

Yup. This is why it needs to be a filter on the desired clip. Alas. It means spending time exporting & generating additional media for this stage of the project. 🙁

Thanks, Dave. Not quite the easy solution I’m looking for. Looks like exporting window burns out of FCP and then into AE for further compositing.
