This is not really going to work. If it were me, I’d simply make the slide show in Motion or AE.

Compressor is always my first stop when I’m trying to do a weird software conversion. I’m often surprised by results that range from excellent to way better than I had any right to expect. As the results from stranger format/frame rate conversions get lower, I then go to Motion or AE or Shake. In the end, the one that sucks the least wins.
That said, going from 720P in any decent codec to 1080i ProRes or uncompressed is usually pretty good via Compressor. Run tests, though, YMMV.

Just to be clear, this requires that you’re either coming in from or going out to an external video connection of some kind. A deck, a monitor, another mac with a Kona, etc.

Your friend should buy a RAID 5 card from either Atto or Areca and a compatable enclosure and fill it with drives.
You can buy a cheaper card, but it won’t really work that well. The whole point of RAID 5 is reliability, and if the card is wonky, like the High Point cards, then you’re not really getting your money’s worth. And in my book, “cost-effective” includes the thing actually working.

And we expect a highly detailed report of how it works, what it breaks, what it fixes and (most important) what varieties of latte and esspresso it adds to Compressor’s out put menus.
