If you read the article, you’ll see that Mathers is comparing the S2 disk recorders to shooting film or HDCam SR. He points out that after something like 30 feature films, S2 hasn’t lost a single frame of video. That assumes people dedicated (and trained) to running it on set.
Tapeless is not for everyone. Film is not for everyone. Mini DV is not for everyone. Every project has it’s own set of needs & limitiations.
Shane, for Perestroika, we archived 8GB cards to dual-layer DVDs. 30 hours of footage fit in a gallon zip-lock bag. With 16GB cards out, I’d structure the archive around blu-ray. With 32GB cards, I’d probably just have to kill myself.

By any chance, was this tape shot in LP mode? If so, you’ll have to get the original camera to use to dub it to a new tape in SP.

I do not think that 4.5 will run on a Mac Pro. It would have to run under Rosetta, and even if id did run, you would probably have problems.
The cost of upgrading from 4.5 to FCP6 (plus all of the other studio apps that are included) is $699. That’s not cheap, but it’s a very good value for what’s included.
If you’re purchasing through a VAR or a local, non chain store, you might be able to negotiate a package price for the new Mac, the FC Studio upgrade, extra memory, storage, etc.

The camera supports 1080P50 and 1080P60. You’ll get your best slow-mo by setting it to one of those settings, and then using Cinema Tools or some other method to give you a frame-to-frame change to 25fps.

Another option is to have them export each of their projects as an XML file. Once you’ve copied the media to your local drive, you import each XML into your existing project & reconnect it’s media. The XML should include all of their logging data. And you don’t have to worry about them being on a newer version of FCP!

Check the properties of this clip. There’s something wrong (or at least different) about it. Is it 24fps, or 23.98? Is it 960X720? Is it DVC Pro HD?

Hmm… It looks like something happened.
It might help if you told us a little more about your Mac. What version of OS X? What version of QT? What kind of storage, how much RAM, etc.
Also, what have you changed or installed recently?

If it’s not the dynamic preivew, it could be an RGB to YUV issue. What codec is the footage? What codec is your timeline? Check the timeline settings to see if you’re set to RGB or YUV processing.
