MiniDV drops frames
I am attempting to digitize footage from a Panasonic DVC miniDV that was shot on a JVC GY 5100 with a Canon GL1. The first two tapes captured fine with no drop frames. The third tape is dropping frames when capturing and when playing on the camera. Would dubbing to a new Mini DV fix the problem?? Any insight would be appreciated!!

If it won’t play correctly on the camera on which it was recorded, its a very bad situation.
You can certainly try to dub from the shooting camera to another unit (via FW) and then try capturing from the dub. Its a good way to solve many kinds of problems.
If that fixes it, you’re home free.

It will not play correctly on a Canon GL1, but it was recorded on a JVC GY 5100. It played fine on the GY 5100. Do you think it is just a compatibility issue??

Yes. Very likely.
There are many incompatiblily issues between brands of DV gear.
Especially Canon and JVC. -
What would be the best way to resolve this? I don’t have access to a JVC camera, do you think using a standard Sony MiniDV-DVCAM deck would work?

By any chance, was this tape shot in LP mode? If so, you’ll have to get the original camera to use to dub it to a new tape in SP.

The tape should not have been shot in LP mode. I’m positive I did not change any settings on the camera before shooting (other than white balance and f-stop).

If you can’t get the original camera, you can try playing it on any number of other cameras or decks. You might get lucky and you might not.
Heck, it might not even play in the original camera.
No way to tell unless you try.
