You need to select an individual point on a path in order to be able to set the first vertex.
To do this choose the selection tool and then click on the point on the path that you wish to be the first vertex. Now the menu option should be available for you to set the first vertex.

Have you checked your fast previews settings to make sure you are viewing your comp at Best, Final quality and are not in a draft mode?

You can create a curve by adding position and Rotation text animators. Add per character 3D tonit and then adjust the settings for Z Position and Y Rotation. To create a smooth curved, go into the Range Selector> Advanced Options and change the setting from
Square to Round Or Smooth.Once you s done this you can use layer styles in AE to add bevels, shadows and a glow.

If you want to make it look as if the particles are moving you will ha e to animate the particles as well as the camera.

The fact that it works using the steps means it’s not the software! ???? so, in AE delete the camera that you have created and instead, in the Cineware effect, click on the Extract button to import exactly the same camera used in C4D into your AE comp. Now you should have a camera in your AE comp that exactly matches the C4D camera.

To check if it’s working please Follow these steps;
In Cinema 4D, create a camera while in the Perspective view.
Save the C4D file.
In AE, go to File > Import and choose the C4D file
Drag the C4D file onto the New Comp button to create a comp with it.
Your view should now be the same as the viewport view in C4D?

If you collapse transformations you will have to make the layers in the nested comes 3D layers too so they react to the 3D camera. try this in all nested comes, it may work.
