Also, Zaxwerks do a great selection of tools that enable you to do a lot of work traditionally done in 3D applications directly in After Effects. For somebody who wants to include 3D in their motion graphics, without attempting the steep learning curve of a dedicated 3D app, these are real gems!
I pretty sure 3D Warp will also give you what you’re after. You can create a sphere from your layer and then use a bump map to create the cling-film texture on the surface. Check out the free demo version first to see if it’ll give you what you need;

You can do this with DE Freeform AE which allows you to make true distortions in 3D space. It now comes bundled in AE CS5 and is a fantastic tool for creating smooth, three-dimensional distortions;

An easy way to do this is to create a Shape Layer the shape you want and then apply the Bevel and Emboss Layer Style to the Shape Layer, changing the Direction setting to Down should give you the effect you’re after, then just tweak to taste!

You can use the Posterize Time effect to change the frame rate of your footage to any frame rate you like.

Great ideas from everyone, it just goes to remind us that there’s definitely more than one way to skin a cat in AE! 😉
You could use Keylight for this, it has lots of tools built in to help with this kind of issue and is very powerful. The Scree De-spot Black settings can be used to remove the black ‘flecks’ and you can determine the area you want to restrict this by creating Masks and using the Inside Mask and Outside Mask settings. I have a free tutorial here, it’s quite old but the steps still work;

Hi there,
Have you checked that these layers are not Guide layers? Guide layers are non-rendering layers that will show up in your comp, but not in the final render (usually used for guides and template layers). It may be that you have accidentally made them guide layers. To check, select the layers and then go to the Layer Menu > Guide layer to check it’s not selected.

You can try saving the effect as a preset, removing it from the solid. Changing the solid settings size and then re-applying. i haven’t tried this, it may work but I suspect that Particle world works out dimensions relative to the layer size so it may not work. Please let me know how you get on 🙂

Ahhhh! All this talk of Sinclair Spectrums and the like is making me reminice about my first forays into computer graphics with good old Deluxe Paint! Anyone remember that? I also had a book on “Compuer Graphics wizzardry” where I had to type in about one whole chapter’s worth of code just to create an open circle! Those were (not) the days! 😉
