Hi..

I have an image of a earth.

I need to slowly wrap it in cling film. This will cause parts of the earth image to bulge (same as would do if it was a balloon) and others to stay tight under the cling film, where it is tight. Then the next bit of cling film goes around and the balloon is tightened in another place. So more bulges.

I have tried puppet… it looks like a potato and I cant get a smooth curve of the balloon earth shape. Also I tried bulge… but non of these are giving me the control over the shape. Advice please. How to distort this as best as possible.

You could try Reshape, Bezier Warp, or Mesh Warp.

I should have said it is 2D.

Mesh warp works great with a bit of bulge too for height… with lots of rows and columns.. Never tried it before. Its good. Shame there is no skew or tilt with bulge effect because that would have been good, but I could not get the angle right.

You can do this with DE Freeform AE which allows you to make true distortions in 3D space. It now comes bundled in AE CS5 and is a fantastic tool for creating smooth, three-dimensional distortions;

Also, Zaxwerks do a great selection of tools that enable you to do a lot of work traditionally done in 3D applications directly in After Effects. For somebody who wants to include 3D in their motion graphics, without attempting the steep learning curve of a dedicated 3D app, these are real gems!

I pretty sure 3D Warp will also give you what you’re after. You can create a sphere from your layer and then use a bump map to create the cling-film texture on the surface. Check out the free demo version first to see if it’ll give you what you need;
