Sounds like you may have a clip there at the end. Even if it’s only one frame it’ll keep it’s position in the timeline. Otherwise, the timeline length changes to however long your sequence is.
Try using the timeline index to find the clip that’s hanging around at the end.

Is that to prevent them from having access to both projects at the same time?
Unless you have two students sharing one drive, I don’t understand why you’d want to go through the trouble. Except maybe as a way to prevent them from having one project get so large they don’t have room for the second project.

I actually agree with your assessment, Simon. But to be the lone voice of what…naivete perhaps? I actually like the color board. I don’t think it’s better than the color wheel, but I can use it fine, and the capabilities and results of FCPX’s color correction are better than FCP 7 in my opinion.
I wonder if the issue was a space issue in the design? Not enough room in the inspector for 3 color wheels? Personally, I would have like to see a color workspace. Avid has the idea of workspaces where you can design your UI for different functions. So you have a Record workspace where the Record Tool is visible, and the audio meters are larger, but the timeline is gone, because you only use this workspace for digitizing.
What if FCPX had a coloring workspace? Then they could have a big color wheel window next to the viewer. The event browser would go away because it’s not needed there. And you could quickly go from clip to clip in your timeline and make changes to color. I would use the hell out of that kind of interface.

No. At this time FCPX only supports broadcast resolutions. You can add your clip to any one of these resolutions and resize to fit the frame, but you cannot create custom resolutions.

I guess I don’t understand the point of this, or even what you’re saying exactly. If the students each have their own Rugged, then why do you have to do anything special for them to use FCPX? Why not just plug it in and let them build their projects on the Rugged drive?

I’m glad 1 and 2 and 3 have been resolved for you. I can see why playing back H264 from 23.98 to 24p over an hour could be glitchy.
I laughed when I read the steps to get the missing markers. I think if you can avoid unplugging your display when working with FCPX on 2 monitors while adding markers to CCs….you should be fine. 🙂

1) I wouldn’t call that bad practice since the new update to FCPX is supposed to allow for that kind of sync clip, and since all sync clips are compound clips, I don’t see why you can’t have an hour long compound clip. However, if you’re having issues, they may be related to your MBP. I haven’t tried an hour long compound clip so I don’t know if the problem is prevalent or isolated to your system.
2) I would definitely convert the h264 to ProRes, although you could work off of proxy if you didn’t want the file size of full ProRes. H264 is not ideal for editing because of it’s Long GOP structure, and I’ve even found that some H264 clips behave different from others inside FCPX.
3) Not sure I understand you here. You can indeed add new media into an existing compound clip. If the CC was created in the browser, open it in Timeline Mode, append the new footage and back out. The CC will update its duration and you’ll see it in the viewer. If the CC was created in the timeline, open in Timeline Mode, append the new footage, back out, and then drag the end of the CC to extend its border to encompass the new footage.
4) Not sure about missing markers, I haven’t noticed that myself, although if you add markers to a CC opened in it’s own timeline, those markers will not translate to the clip in the Event Browser.

Have you tried to duplicate your project when you notice that the Undo feature isn’t working (before quitting)? This is not a solution to why autosave isn’t working for you, but it may help prevent you from losing work each time it does.

You know, I was surprised by how well some of the trackpad gestures worked when working on my laptop (I’m new to the laptop world). For a desktop, I could definitely see a new paradigm to the mouse where you use a two-handed trackpad perhaps with a display (like an ipad but larger). Perhaps it even replaces the keyboard as well (although I prefer typing on actual keys).
An industry standard is only an industry standard until it’s not. Remember when phones used to have buttons on them?

I’m glad you got your event back, but keep in mind that you CAN duplicate from the finder…you just happened upon the way to cause problems. 🙂
It’s similar to the file structure you see in P2 cards and such. If the lastclip.txt file is missing or corrupt, then you lose access to the video files that were created on the camera.
As soon as I noticed that the actual event file is called, “currentevent”, I realized that ALL events had a file with the exact same name. That told me that if I wanted to duplicate the event from the finder, that I needed to duplicate the entire folder (which is labeled as the name of the event).
I understand why this tripped you up; FCP 7 contains the entire project info in a single project file, but FCPX doesn’t. Luckily this didn’t cause any permanent damage to your event/project.
