Hi Jason
Since a pretty long while now the effect processing capacity of your host Mac has outstripped pretty much any hardware handling offered by your I/O card. I’d suggest you’d be best off setting the effect handling to “Final Cut Pro” for pretty much every codec. That said, what card are you using?

I hear you Doug, and as noted, my comment was “with respect”. No offense was intended.
I was hoping to clarify only that part of your post where it stated what you are getting now is an anamorphic image which is also referred to as “squeeze” This is acceptable for DVD authoring but not for broadcast. they’ll want “letterbox” or “center cut” which I though had the potential for misinterpretation by other less experienced viewers of this thread.

open FCP … look in the Effects > Video Filters > Matte folder

FCP tends to prefer 48kHz aiff audio … its possible that the distortion you’re hearing may be due to an incompatibility with a less supported audio codec. This is especially common if and when you try working with MP3 audio in an FCP timeline.
Could that be the issue?

Modify > Make Offline …
Modify > Clip Settings …
File > Batch Capture …should work, but try it on a couple of test clips / sequences first before you go the whole hog

As recommended earlier, check with your traget broadcaster as to their requirements/preference. Doug’s advice here, with respect, is not always necessarily correct, inasmuch as broadcasters might indeed prefer an anamorphic master which they can repurpose as desired eg 16:9, 14:9 or 4:3.

Can you confirm that switching your views to List View (without thumbnails) in the Browser window does fix the issue? Ie Can you confirm that it is specifically the thumbnail drawing thats causing the issue? Does trashing the existing thumbnail cache help at all?

I use Edius a lot …. its a rock solid and very capable NLE, but like any complicated software its interface can be a little quirky, though nothing you won’t grow accustomed to. There is a whole heck of a lot I don’t like about Edius but it’s come on in leaps and bounds since TGV took ownership and there are times when I’m using it and wishing that FCP could do the same thing. Still, I’ll be glad to see the back of it.

File menu > Export > Quicktime Movie w/ Current Settings and Make Movie Self Contained
Failing that you need to better explain what you are trying to do Robert. Are the setting listed your target format or your source format or both. If not both, what are your source/target settings?
