Could you please provide info an the files you are using that are having the issue.

FCP tends to prefer 48kHz aiff audio … its possible that the distortion you’re hearing may be due to an incompatibility with a less supported audio codec. This is especially common if and when you try working with MP3 audio in an FCP timeline.

    Could that be the issue?

im importing to my external hard drive direcly from the raw footage captured on a JVC mini dv camcorder. I put it in FCP, do my basic editing, render it all, export it and put it on a dvd as a quicktime, and it makes random poping noises…

Are the pops truly random or do they occur in the same place every time? Have you checked your audio levels inside FCP. Are there any clips(meter goes red). Also, as Andy says, check your clip properties and see what sample rate is listed. Some camcorders record audio with a sample rate other than 48k (eg. 44.1 or 32kHz). Also, try an audio mixdown: Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown and see if that helps.

Sometimes, straight cuts in audio tracks can cause slight ‘pops’ on playback and even output, even when the sound is 48k AIFFs. It can happen more often, as I’ve encountered, with audio that was originally MP3s or WAVs and transcoded into AIFF’s, or even 44.1kHz stuff that’s upsampled to 48. And it can also happen more often when you have a lot of soundtracks layered together….like 8 tracks (or 4 stereo tracks), for example. Sometimes I add little crossfades at the cut points and/or extend the handles. Sound processing in FCP is still rather quirky at times (artifacts left behind where there should be silence, or the content shifting within the track after rendering audio effects). Also try raising the audio playback quality under User Preferences and see if that helps during playback.
