Agreed. Upgrade after upgrade, we’ve all whined like babies over the continuing issues with clip speed handling, especially so with respect to rippling timelines and more importantly Media Mangling, and with this release Apple have addressed exactly these issues … and not by just tacking on an extra checkbox here or there either, but by completely rewriting the core handling of the functions so that they perform exactly the way we’ve been asking them to.

Heee. Well now you’re over egging it Walter 🙂 There is still a very long list of things that weren’t addressed … little things that would have gone a very long way to making this upgrade really feel like they’d pulled out all the stops to address our niggles. But its still early days. Despite the naysayers I think Apple are listening very carefully to our feedback and are reacting accordingly behind the scenes. This is a very encouraging release, in fact one of the most encouraging in FCP history.

Yup … 6.0.3 I think actually, but either way, the XDCAM EX codecs are not available in 5.1.x. You need to upgrade if you want to legally access these codecs in FCP.

Will it do the whole preroll, digitize thing, similar to tape?
Exactly. You’d hook up an XDCAM deck to your edit systems I/O device (Kona/Blackmagic/Matrox etc) and use it exactly as you would a normal tape based system to capture the offline material. The recapture codec/settings would be whatever you defined in the Batch Capture dialog.

What are you using for device control? I fear you’ll never be frame accurate if you’re using Firewire as its simply not an accurate device control protocol. Admittedly it should only ever be a few frames out, not 50 odd seconds, so you’ve almost certainly got something screwy elsewhere too (most likely in your deck settings) … but either way, if you need to perform frame accurate editing to tape then you need to avoid FW deck control.
Ask your boss to get you an I/O device that offers integrated audio/video output with RS422 control … an Intensity Pro or a Matrox MXO Mini are very affordable solutions.
