As has already been posted, there is still support when then camera is attached via USB … its been reported that Sony’s XDCAM Transfer software is working just fine in Snow Leopard with this configuration and similarly that FCP7’s built in Log and Transfer interface is also working just fine with USB attached EX hardware. The issue appears to be specifically with native SxS cards (ie an issue with Sony’s SxS driver) and that the MxR ExpressCard/34 based SDHC adapters, for example, are working just fine (apparently they identify themselves to the system as USB devices).

I’ll reiterate, the issue is not with ExpressCard/34 support in Snow Leopard, its with SxS card support.

Toast seems to like AVCHD and also offers reasonably codec agnostic transcoding … maybe that will work for you?

Don’t use “Batch Capture” Dag, instead use the Make Offline command on your clips, then open the Log and Capture window (Cmd 8) and press the Batch button to capture the “logged” clips. See if that works.

Yup, nesting as a matter of course is a bit of a nightmare … although FCP 7 apparently handles nests far more robustly than previous versions so it may be “better” than it was. But you are asking about the elusive Video Mixdown function, not nests. Unfortunately the Video Mixdown function is elusive in FCP because it doesn’t exist in FCP. I understand that you don’t “want” to export as a QuickTime Movie, import the created file and then cut that back into the sequence in place of the original, but unfortunately that is exactly what you have to do if a Video Mixdown is what you need. Its also possible to simply render a marked section and then manually find and pull that (newest) render file out of the Video Renders folder … still far from ideal but thats the way it is for the moment.

One option you can investigate is to set the MXO2 Preference Pane’s A/V Input > Scaling >> Source to SD 16:9 … you’ll then get an upscale that stretches your source to fill the full HD frame after which you can “distort” back to the correct aspect and reframe as needed in the motion tab. It may, or it may not, give better results than a the software upscale in both x & y axis? Might be worth a look.

Nope … can’t see the option to center cut on upscale. I see an “HD to SD aspect ratio” control but nothing for SD to HD. Does the same control work for both directions for you? It didn’t used to for me … will have a play later.
