  • FYI – Sony warns not to update to Snow Leopard – XDCAM support

Posted by Craig Cerhit on August 28, 2009 at 8:18 pm

    emailed to me today.

Sony support has advised that unfortunately Snow Leopard is not currently supported by the current versions of XDCAM related software’s from Sony.

Since this is a very recent release from Apple that involves significant change to the Mac OS it may take several months, perhaps winter or spring for full Snow Leopard support from Sony. The exact schedule is still TBD.

It is therefore recommended to continue using the most recent release of Leopard to maintain smooth operation of the XDCAM software within the Mac environment.

For your reference the latest Sony software release versions are as below:

    As of August 26th 2009

    PDW-U1 v 2.420

PDW-U1 Utility for PC or Mac v 2.21

FAM Driver 2.20 comes with the PDZ-1 software or XDT for Mac

    PDZ-1 v 2.60

XDCAM Viewer 2.30 PC only separate from PDZ-1

XDCAM TRANSFER for FCP v 2.10.0

    EX Browser 2.5.1

Thanks for your continued support of XDCAM!

It’s not like this new version of OS X has been any sort of secret nor has their not been total access to beta builds over time for developers like Sony. There’s no reason for any developer to not be ready to support Snow Leopard the second it ships or maybe it’s not be worth their full resources/priorities I guess.

Just an FYI for those who are contemplating….

The express slot on the MBP DOES NOT WORK! It crashes the system to plug a card directly into a laptop.

    However…

You can still plug the camera in via USB and retrieve files.

Annoying, but not entirely dysfunctional. I, for one, am sticking with Snow Leopard. Got back quiet a bit of HD space and it’s faster accessing external media. Worth it to me.

    Whatever you do…

    BACKOFF BEFORE INSTALLING!!!

    Good Luck!

I agree. But after waiting and waiting for that PDW-U1 software that was supposedly right around the corner forever, I wouldn’t hold my breath on Snow Leopard any time soon.

    Absolutely irresponsible of them.

Imagine what happens to anyone buying new Macs which all have Snow Leopard installed. For all intents and purposes it means there’s no Mac support as far as new Mac owners are concerned.

So I guess no there’s no reason for us to wish for Apple to include Express slots in any upcoming laptops since they now don’t work with SxS.

As has already been posted, there is still support when then camera is attached via USB … its been reported that Sony’s XDCAM Transfer software is working just fine in Snow Leopard with this configuration and similarly that FCP7’s built in Log and Transfer interface is also working just fine with USB attached EX hardware. The issue appears to be specifically with native SxS cards (ie an issue with Sony’s SxS driver) and that the MxR ExpressCard/34 based SDHC adapters, for example, are working just fine (apparently they identify themselves to the system as USB devices).

I’ll reiterate, the issue is not with ExpressCard/34 support in Snow Leopard, its with SxS card support.

    Hope it helps

Does this problem also extend to Sony’s SxS card reader and a MacPro running Snow Leopard? Has anyone experimented with it?

So far I don’t see any problems with Clip Browser 2.5.01 and XDCAM Transfer 2.10 in Snow Leopard although I’m only reading files off an internal hard drive.

I’ll test the SxS reader on my MacPro.

I post this message on many forums after having contacted Sony Support last week.

In my conversation with Sony support they advised me that unfortunately

Thanks for your continued support of XDCAM!

So you may find it often but i have done this to avoid the rush of Too Fast Fatal Upgrading.
