nothing to render Tom, this was just a test with some native DV clips thrown into a native DV timeline, cuts only … trimmed down to 2’30” and exported as QT Movie with “make self-contained” both checked and unchecked.
result – two movie clips identical in size (540MB) and taking the same time to export
would you mind to run a similar test yourself, from within FCP? I’d value your insight.

FCP is showing you a “preview quality” version … you will need to render to see the full quality

The really big adopters for XDCAM HD are news stations, the format and workflow are an awesome combination for short form ENG work.
Working with an MPEG based codec for longer form editing is a real pain, and its no surprise so many are opting for the baseband to DVCPRO HD routeIts still probalbly a little early to tell what will be the industry standard for HD work, but for now, on the FCP platform, there is a groundswell of opinion in favor of DVCPRO HD.
With so much more to come in the HD realm, it will be really interesting to see where it all takes us. I’m looking forward to the second incarmation of the XDCAM HD hardware and codecs with 2/3″ chips and 4:4:4 color space.

check your sequence settings, make sure the “Anamorphic” checkbox is not checked
check the properties of your sequence clip, make sure the “Anamorphic” checkbox is checked -

interesting experiment certainly, but hardly a realistic wotkflow.although the specs and software that Shane suggested might be overkill for your project, you ought to budget for a second computer for capture (if you can’t buy one – or borrow one – you can always rent one)

create 2 instances of QT Player
launch them both
for each instance of the player select theQuickTime Player > Preferences (Cmd comma) and under the “Recording” section choose your Video and Audio source, then when you’re all set up, choose “New Movie Recording” (Cmd Option N)good luck (you’ll probably need it)

bit late as a answer but i think useful enough to warrant sharing (should anyone not already know) …
was just browsing through Larry Jordan’s latest newsletter and noticed a comment on slipping keyframes. this was with respect to applying a vdeo filter to a specific portion of video by use of the range selection tool … clever me, i already knew about filters and range selection, but Larry’s info was describing how one would use the slip tool in the viewer to slip the selected range, and therefore also the associated keyframes. normally, my practice would be to slip video filter keyframes using the click and drag method within in the clip keyframe area in the timeline … however i knew that this trick only applies to video filter keyframes not to audio level keyframes.
anyway, the article reminded me of this thread and prompted me to have a look with respect to slipping audio levels keyframes… and sure enough it works, albeit without benefit of GUI feedback.
lets assume that you have applied a series of audio level keyframes to a clip and now wish to slip them a little, heres how:
load the audio clip from the timeline into the viewer
select the slip tool
then simply click and drag on any keyframe (or anywhere on the level line itself) within the waveform area of the viewer to slip the clip’s keyframes (the cursor will change to the slip tool as you hover over the right area)… release the mouse button and you’ll see that the keyframes have indeed slipped appropriately, whereas the clip’s in, out and placement, has remained unchanged. unfortunately however, theres none of the feedback that we’ve come to expect from rest of the FCP interface during this process… no phantom marks showing where the keyframes are moving to, no counter to show how many frames left and right the keyframes are being moved.
it seems to be another one of those not quite finished undocumented features.

from FCP, Export > Using Compressor…
in the Compressor app you will be able to adjust the settings, and see exactly how it will affect the ouput, using a live spilt screen view showing both source and target -
open QuickTime Player
choose File > Open Image Sequence …
navigate to the folder of images, select the first image of the sequence, and press “Open”
choose the fps setting for the movie you wish to create and press “OK”that will open the image sequence as a movie clip … now just use File > Export to save in the desired format
