another issue worth taking note of is that at present the direct AVI export from FCP/QT can produce a corrputed file, insomuch as the video will often contain additional frames. if that happens, when viewed, the picture will appear to ‘stutter’. this happens regularly with AVI’s exported using the DV PAL codec … I haven’t tested to see whether the issue is codec dependent.

a reliable workaround is to first export your movie from FCP as a quicktime reference movie, and then use MPEG Streamclip’s “Export to AVI” function, which produces good AVI’s where QT’s export fails.

embedded tc in SDI is not common but products such as Miranda’s DENSITE will do it … i noted there doesn’t seem to be any element of deck control in the mockup shown, just an hd/sd sdi input and output … but i guess there are plenty of usb/serial to RS422 adaptors that would handle that.

not sure that any of the curent crop of laptops could handle an uncompressed hd/sd video stream, and as the card is using the expresscard slot then thers no option for adding eSATA suport.

be great to see someone like BMD (or AJA) pick up on this, and offer an expresscard34 version of their Multibridge hardware.

It seems most likely that its a RAID configuration issue. How is your RAID configured (0,1 ,5 etc)? How many drives? What settings are you using? Have you used the AJA KONA System Test utility?

You want to enable the drive cache as well as enable the controller write cache. Your Xserve RAID should draw power from a UPS. Another performance tune you can do is set read prefetch to 8 stripes in order to improve sequential read performance (as is often the case with audio and video editing). You should only enabled the drive caches if the Xserve RAID is connected to a UPS. In addition, only enabled the write caches if you have the controller backup batteries installed.

when you do assemble it is giving you everything … that the nature of an assemble edit , no fine control
with insert you have to specify what you want, and you can only specify for those channels that are active.

your understanding of channels is steering you a little off kilter here … change the device control settings audio mapping to 8 channels and see if you now can control the insert mapping in the ett window.

plus if it works please go back to the apple discussions and mark your thread solved!

dnt have the Kona so can’t say what the default audio mapings are for that setup

but if you go to your audio/video settings window (cmd-opt-q) switch to the device control presets tab, scroll down till you see your chosen preset and double click it
amongst the other settings you will see “Audio Mappings” … this controls how many audio tracks your device control can handle … if its only set to 4 then you will not be able to enable and disable tracks 5 & 6 through the ETT windows’ destination tracks popup.

along the same lines

if you do enable your mac network, appoint an admin for the mac network (you?), and make sure that all the other accounts on all the macs are “managed” not “admin”
this way you can prevent ad-hoc download and installation of all the crap that will inevitably find its way onto your edit workstations as everyone decides to install their latest favourite apps, utils and widgets.
also, turn off software update, otherwise you’ll find some helpful halfwit will upgrade the software configuration to something horribly untested and unstable at every opportunity
plus …. plenty of other really good reasons i can’t remember right now 🙂

earlier I was reproducing the problem ad infinitum. now testing on my own laptop at home and getting ‘real’ results as per your own.
