  • How do I letterbox?

Posted by Michael Noble on August 6, 2006 at 9:59 pm

In FCP I have a HDV 1080 60i project all nice and ready to go which I shot in 16:9. I export a QT. Then do I ?

    Easy setup NTSC / DV
Import my original QT into a new project and drag it in my sequence
Shouldn’t I see the letterbox in the canvas? It is however not working what am I doing wrong.

    Thanks!
    Mike

check your sequence settings, make sure the “Anamorphic” checkbox is not checked
check the properties of your sequence clip, make sure the “Anamorphic” checkbox is checked

    Mike,
you dont need to export a quicktime. Simply drag your finished anamorphic sequence, into a new non-anamorphic sequence. It will either look letterboxed, or squashed. If it doesnt look letter boxed, highlight the anamophic sequence in its new timeline, press return. This will load up the sequence in the viewer, you can then change the distort settings in the motion tab. Aspect ratio shoul dbe either 33.33 or -33.33 depending if it is squashed width or hieght.

    best wishes
    Nick

The first question here is… what is your final product?

Are you exporting to tape or to DVD?

If you are exporting to DVD or web, just export to Compressor and select the correct settings for your needs. You’ll have to change some settings but it will do a great job. If you are exporting to tape (DV), then you need to create a new sequence with the DV settings and drop your HDV timeline in it. It will letterbox for you automatically.
