They told me that all the editors give them the EDL in C-Mode. I guess not a lot of them use FCP. Is FCP really able to do high end jobs, or should we start thinking of going back to Avid?
It seems to me that the chap you spoke with at the expensive post house was a little less than able on his online system. I would be concerned indeed about paying a lot of money to have someone so inexperienced handling my project … it should make no difference whatsoever to the online editor whether you gave them A, B or C as it is only a matter of moments to reorder the EDL using the edit controller. Is CP really able to do high end jobs? Yes of course. Should you start thinking of going back to Avid. Sure, if you want to. You should use whichever tool suits your needs best. My concern at this moment would be with The Mill.

i had taken the request to mean slipping/sliding a block of clips as a single item … must remember to engage brain before posting in future … or perhaps just go ahead and start answering random questions that haven’t been asked yet and see if anyone can guess the question (made even more difficult by actually getting the answers wrong). 🙂 -

sadly not. one of those things that Avid can do but FCP can’t …. not to say there aren’t many things that FCP can do that Avid can’t, but trimming multiple unlinked clips is not one of them

.. and when bogiesan needs a whinge you gotta just let it roll over you 🙂David, I wish I felt your pain but I don’t have my copy of FCP2 yet, you lucky dog. Oh for that pretty “gloss” upgrade. If I don’t get a multi-format timeline and ProRes422 renders here in my multi MPEG2 format world soon, I swear I’m going to die!

the VO tool will use the lowest track targeted if it contains no audio between the marked in and out, if audio already exists between those points then it will insert a new audio track below the lowest targeted one … or at least i think so 🙂

I’ve played with it some during the beta test period. It’s a nice app, well designed, easy to use and visually pleasing. Integrates well with FCP via FCP XML export of logged media. If you’re looking for an app designed for logging already digitised/captured material then you can do a lot worse. This ones not for logging tape based media tho.

always unmount the previous media drive (scratch disc location) prior to starting FCP, then it’ll ask you to set a new one … you could write an FCP launch script to do this but it seems a bit unrealistic
