check your local bricks and mortar retailers and/or ebay … you’ll likely find one with old stock only too happy to sell you the upgrade.

– can i really capture in “full XDCam qualilty” via firewire without having an HD capture card? (i’ve been getting different answers on that)

xdcam transfer copies the data from the xdcam disc to your hard drive over firewire … its just a transfer, not a capture, so no capture card is needed

you can harp on here as long as you like but the problem is your expectation. you seem aggrieved that the xml does not hand you on a plate the values that you want … but the values you need are indeed all there; witness the fact that when you import the xml the sequence is correctly recreated. you just have to calculate them from the given data my friend. lots of people using XML automation methods do exactly that, and you just have to get on and do this too. (or you could just carry on blindly stating the xml is “wrong”, your choice)

hey Jabran

opened the xml on my system and all worked fine … but got spinning beach ball of death before i could look at the timeline

opened project file and exported as xml from my system (xml v1 as per fcp 4.5)
reopened xml and all was fine, sequence identical to original timeline
would be happy to send you the xml but need an address to send it to.

When you import your XML back into FCP does the imported version of the sequence appear correctly?

If YES, then there is nothing wrong with the XML. The only problem is your expectation that it should work the way you want it to, rather than the way its does.

If NO, then there you might be in the unfortunate position of having uncovered a bug in the XML export

Let us know either way. If its the former then maybe we can help you to figure out how you calculate this value for your needs. If its the latter then maybe we could help verify the bug.

it may not have been your specific question, but it was a question you should have been asking, and I assumed you had already read the box where it states that it’s a universal binary version … and it came out after the intel macs went on sale (but perhaps before your particular model went on sale)

I posted back on your other thread (apple). I’ll copy it here for you too, if only to bump this up the list in case anyone has useful input :

I do this all the time. Well SD on an HD timeline anyway. I blow it up to fit the width using nothing more than the scale property.

Does it look good? Not as compared to the HD, no. But I’m not trying to hide it either. I use mixed sources and my viewers know this, maybe not explicitly, but they know.

I do have to render this SD footage in my HD timeline (FCP5), but I don’t have any sync issues.

For best results you should do a hardware upconvert, if you have access to the appropriate hardware of course. I always prefer to upconvert by running the SD into my HD deck and letting the deck upconvert to my timeline native format, and then capture native.

All that said and done, what is causing your sync loss issue?? Lordy, I don’t know! Could it be a frame rate / drop frame mismatch? I have always lived and worked in lovely PAL land, so all that drop frame nonsense is gobbledygook to me 🙂

Your license allows you to install on your personal laptop and desktop … but this is meant solely for use by you, its not a clause intended to allow you and your coworker to both have a copy to use.

what you’re looking to do is something called “ducking” … and No, this is not something that is a feature of FCP. You’ll need to ride these levels manually.
