yes, you’ve been misinformed.

if you want a offline/online workflow using proxies as the offline then you’re best to use a different NLE … it can be achieved with FCP but I wonder whether the workflow is worth the trouble.

not surprisingly, Sony’s own NLE, Vegas, is said to have excellent support for proxy editing with background conform to high res. alternatively, GVG’s Edius offers spectacular integration :- you import the proxies and can edit with them directly and then conform a timeline to the high res media at a later time, or set a background process to load the associated high res media, and automatically replace the proxies (in the bin and any instance in the timeline) whilst you continue to edit … its quite seamless.

unfortunately Apple are not so open with their applications, however, that does mean FCP maintains a clean, uniform and stable interface where other NLE’s may not.

if you are hell bent on a proxy based workflow there are a number of things to be aware of:

Just confirming the above … this response from Sony support:

The basic problem is that Apple renamed their sequence presets in FCP 6 and our export plug-in can no longer find the correct preset to use as a result of this change.

To workaround this, you need to create a copy of the relevant sequence preset and rename it to match the old (FCP 5) name:

(1) Open the FCP ‘Audio/Video Settings’ window.
(2) Select the ‘Sequence Presets’ tab.
(3) Find the sequence preset which is being used for editing (new name).
(4) Duplicate this preset.
(5) Rename the new preset according to the old name (they are listed in
section 8.1 of the XDT user guide – the text must match exactly).
*do not change anything else – just the preset name*
(6) Relaunch FCP.
(7) Use the new preset for the sequence.

When ‘Export Sony XDCAM’ is now used, the new preset should be found and exporting should work as normal.

thanks very very much indeed … that explains a lot.

following my own earlier advice, or rather when I just installing a brand new FCS2 or a brand new Mac, followed by XDCAM Transfer … I had just discovered the loss of IMX30 & 50 and ALL XDCAM HD export options!

of course none of the previous sequence presets were there in that scenario, so where an upgrade ignored some old presets, and overwrote others, the clean install had none of those old presets, so XDCAM Transfer’s export plugin was doubly scuppered.

your workaround is looking a lot like a knight in shining armor right now 🙂

did you upgrade your suite or do the full clean install? are the IMX issues solely with IMX50, and not IMX30/40 ? Is it just a problem with export to xdcam disc (or also as mxf to local drive) ?

XDCAM HD at HQ, and HDV in the same HQ timeline, can be very trying experience for both you and your computer (this may be a little easier with FCP6 due to the improvements with RT Extreme). if you do have issues when mixing the formats, then your best bet is to edit any HDV segments/inserts in an HDV native timeline, and then nest that into your master HQ timeline.

that said, I wouldn’t shoot XDCAM HD at anything other than HQ. it is specifically that format that makes it look so damn good …. why spend all that money and then dumb your gear down to shoot typical HDV?

others have reported a loss of functionality with the IMX / XDCAM Transfer / FCP 6 combination.

did you do a full clean install of OS X, then a clean install of FCS 2 then finally an install of XDCAM Transfer, or did you just upgrade to FCS2? if the former then that would seem to confirm the reported issue … if the latter, then the issue may be a driver/codec conflict or some such
