    Hi All,

I’ve edited on FCP and Avid over the last 7 years and more and more stuff in FCP is starting to annoy me. I like to use my keyboard for everything, but why is it in fcp that if I overlay a clip from the viewer to the timeline it activates the timeline window, whereas if you drag and drop it the viewer stays active, it is really starting to annoy me the I have to keep using the mouse to click here there and everywhere I just want to be able to go through clips and quickly make selects without using the mouse.
Why can’t they just implement a few more avid features. Like matching a still frame in the viewer to the orignal clip the still was made from, qiute simple but saves time!
Why can’t their be an effects window that shows up the effects on a clip when you select it rather than double cliking here there and every where just to see them.
Does anyone know who deals with new features with fcp as I want to drop them an email with some suggestions that will make it far better, as I’m so close to leaving fcp forever.

    Thanks

    Jason

Wouldn’t that just be “f” match frame or are you talking about something different?

“Why can’t their be an effects window that shows up the effects on a clip when you select it rather than double cliking here there and every where just to see them.”

Change the Viewer sync to Open. The clip in the Viewer will track the clip you are parked on in the Time line or Canvas.

The sync is the center button on the top ot the Viewer. The Icon looks like two golf tees.

It all really depends on your situation. I’m editing on Avid right now and I can’t stand the Avid implementation because I’m fine cutting. And I only need to edit in one new shot, but Avid keeps activating the source window! I need it to activate the timeline! Whereas if I was assembling a sequence, I would’ve love the Avid implementation because it’s always activating the source window. So it all depends on where you’re at in your stage of editing.
Since you like to use the keyboard, you know you can activate the timeline with Cmd-3? And the Viewer is Cmd-1.

[Jason] “Why can’t their be an effects window that shows up the effects on a clip when you select it rather than double cliking here there and every where just to see them.”
Again, that’s another thing on the Avid that I can’t stand. Why use up more screen space for this annoying window that floats around that you can’t dock anywhere?!? You can select the clip and hit return on the keyboard to open it in the viewer.

Software developing is like trying to hit a moving target. Your suggestions would make you happy but it would annoying the hell out of me. So who are they going to please?

Don’t take this as a snide comment: What’s the point of FCP adding Avid features, then they’ll just be another Avid! I’ve heard a lot of people say this exact thing – it seems like what they really want is a more affordable HD Adrenaline not another implementation of an editing system.

Though, still match frame back to original media would be much welcome in FCP.

From the timeline, press F. That match frames the original clip into the Viewer.

Jason, take a deep breath, and say to yourself:
    FCP is NOT Avid!

” I like to use my keyboard for everything, but why is it in fcp that if I overlay a clip from the viewer to the timeline it activates the timeline window”

    cant answer that,
but i know what to do about it…

in avid you use the esc key to toggle between viewer & canvas,
in FCP you use the Q key,
    so make your edit, (F10)
    Q back to the viewer

“Like matching a still frame in the viewer to the orignal clip the still was made from, qiute simple but saves time!”

    i hear you!

“Why can’t their be an effects window that shows up the effects on a clip when you select it rather than double cliking here there and every where just to see them.”

in general FCP is designed to be operated with the Keyboard AND the mouse.
that;s just the way it is.

    having said, that,
you can generally open a clip from the timeline by simply being parked on it and hitting ENTER or RETURN.

from there you can Shift Apple [ (Square bracket) to step forward thru the window’s tabs.
Shift Apple ] will step backward.
but clicking on the “Filters’ tab is pretty easy, really.

once you get used to the way FCP works, you’ll probably like it.
most people making the transition feel the effects side if FCP is way easier than Avid.

    cheers

I’m reiterating what Jason said re: Matching back to the original video clip from a freeze frame.
FCP match frame freeze frames back to itself, not the original video clip that it came from (as you all know). So the Avid ability in this case, would be good to implement in FCP. But i think it has to do with how FCP and Avid create their media, OMF/XMF vs QT. So it may not be possible unless some major happens with QT. Just guessing.

[Chi-Ho Lee] “I’m reiterating what Jason said re: Matching back to the original video clip from a freeze frame.”

This is because the freeze is just a generated image that no longer has timecode. I honestly have never had to match back to a freeze frame in all my work. Didn’t even know that was an issue.

Am I the only one that thinks a combo of mouse/keyboard is faster than a zillion keyboard strokes? Avid or fcp.
