exporting IMX from FCP to XDCAM PDW-D1 via Sony plugin
Posted by Martijn Tervoort on July 13, 2007 at 9:48 pmSince I upgraded to FCP studio 2 (and also upgraded QuickTime) I am not longer able to export in IMX 30/40/50 to my Sony PDW-D1 XDCAM recorder via FAM mode. . I can still export in DVCAM via FAM as well as using the AV/C mode. When I use the IMX settings it renders in FCP but when the Sony plugin starts to export to disk it s stops at 2% and the recorder stops and doesn’t work anymore untill I switch it on/off again. Although I’m using new XDCAM disks it gives the message that I should check if the disk is full or the rec-inhibit is on. All this is the same in other configurations, using other Mac’s and other PDW-D1 machines. It wasn’t with the old FCP studio 1 (FCP5) installed. Please help me…

July 14, 2007 at 2:45 amothers have reported a loss of functionality with the IMX / XDCAM Transfer / FCP 6 combination.
did you do a full clean install of OS X, then a clean install of FCS 2 then finally an install of XDCAM Transfer, or did you just upgrade to FCS2? if the former then that would seem to confirm the reported issue … if the latter, then the issue may be a driver/codec conflict or some such

July 16, 2007 at 2:51 pmReinstall the Sony Transfer software and FCP will see it. Although, its still not fully functional. I still cannot export to IMX50 but all of the others have worked beautifully.
You do have full and complete support for XDCAM HD, its just limited support for IMX50.

July 17, 2007 at 2:56 amWayne,
did you upgrade your suite or do the full clean install? are the IMX issues solely with IMX50, and not IMX30/40 ? Is it just a problem with export to xdcam disc (or also as mxf to local drive) ?
Thanks

July 17, 2007 at 12:59 pmI upgraded to FCS2. I didn’t really think is was necessary to do a clean install since my system has been running fine.
The only issue that I have had is anything dealing with the Sony IMX50 codec and nothing else. I have created my own Easy Setup and it works. Its just an issue with the Sony Transfer software. It will not let me export to IMX50 nor does it show up in my Easy Setup list of options to use.
Other than that, It works just fine. At the moment, I’m exporting to IMX40 to disc and then making my BetaSP master for broadcast. It seems to work fine and I can’t see a noticable difference in quality when the BetaSP dub is finished.

July 17, 2007 at 4:28 pmI posted a workaround for the IMX50 export problem here:
https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/142/855681?
Not sure that this solves the PDW-D1 problem at the top of this thread, since Martijn said that export had started successfully but bailed out at around 2%… That sounds like something different.
Martijn, what firmware does your PDW-D1 have? Does even a short IMX sequence with tones&bars fail to export in the same way? Or only your real sequences? Any other info might help one of us track down your problem.

thanks very very much indeed … that explains a lot.
following my own earlier advice, or rather when I just installing a brand new FCS2 or a brand new Mac, followed by XDCAM Transfer … I had just discovered the loss of IMX30 & 50 and ALL XDCAM HD export options!
of course none of the previous sequence presets were there in that scenario, so where an upgrade ignored some old presets, and overwrote others, the clean install had none of those old presets, so XDCAM Transfer’s export plugin was doubly scuppered.
your workaround is looking a lot like a knight in shining armor right now 🙂
cheers

July 18, 2007 at 1:44 amHi All
Just confirming the above … this response from Sony support:
The basic problem is that Apple renamed their sequence presets in FCP 6 and our export plug-in can no longer find the correct preset to use as a result of this change.
To workaround this, you need to create a copy of the relevant sequence preset and rename it to match the old (FCP 5) name:
(1) Open the FCP ‘Audio/Video Settings’ window.
(2) Select the ‘Sequence Presets’ tab.
(3) Find the sequence preset which is being used for editing (new name).
(4) Duplicate this preset.
(5) Rename the new preset according to the old name (they are listed in
section 8.1 of the XDT user guide – the text must match exactly).
*do not change anything else – just the preset name*
(6) Relaunch FCP.
(7) Use the new preset for the sequence. When ‘Export Sony XDCAM’ is now used, the new preset should be found and exporting should work as normal.
Best

August 22, 2007 at 2:41 pmDear Andy a.o.
The problem does not lie in the naming of the sequence settings. Also I reinstalled al my software, including a clean install of my OS. Doing al of this the problem persists. Strangely enough I hear a lot of my colleagues who have the same problem as I have. Strangely enough I don’t find any information about this on the discussion forums.

August 22, 2007 at 5:23 pmPersonally, I can’t vouch for the D-1 but I can with the V-1. I was having similar problems before my Sony rep pointed out that there was a update to the firmware to the machine last year. Since that time, I’v had not one issue with the machine and Sony’s software.
