FCP in Outside Broadcast Unit Setup
Hi all,
I’d really appreciate some advice on the this system that I have to setup in our OB unit.
In a few months time we have to shoot a “pop idol” type show, which we shoot “as live”, and is broadcast a few days later. In previous series, we have shot the footage in the OB, then compiled the shows in our Avid Adrenaline back in the facilities house. This has put us under deadline pressure, and now we are looking for a neater and more efficient solution.
We have an Intel G5 with dual core 2.5 ghz processors and FCP 5. We have been using this system to cut DV based documentarys. However, we are planning to upgrade this to an SD system and use it in the OB to compile the shows, thus negating the need to bring the footage back to the facilities house. This would save us a whole heap of time and bother. But I just need some questions answered to get the thing off the ground.
1 – As space is a premium in the OB we are planning to use a Decklink Pro card (where the cables come out ot the back, rather than an AJA IO for example, which has a breakout box) and internal SCSI Drives as storage. So my question is – what kind of internal SCSI drives should I buy, can I RAID them, and how many streams of uncompressed 8-bit SD can I realistically expect to get?
2 – As the Digibeta deck will all be in use while recording the shows, I will be capturing wild from the mixed master footage. Without deck control, will the timecode information come through th SDI cable, as it does in an Avid setup?
Hope I haven’t bored you to death with my questions, and thanks in advance for any advice or information that you can provide.
Regards
Brian
