FCP 5.1 version for an intel based macbook pro?

Your license allows you to install on your personal laptop and desktop … but this is meant solely for use by you, its not a clause intended to allow you and your coworker to both have a copy to use.

that wasn’t my question, the question is, this version was not bought for an intel mac, and I am wondering what do I have to do to install it on an intel mac? Can it be installed on an intel mac? This was the version that came out shortly before the intel macs went on sale.

5.1 is the universal binary version. Meaning it is both PPC or Intel native. Just install it. And then of course get the updates to 5.1.4 which fix many many little issues.

the problem is she is your co-worker so I assume that she is using it to make money doing video production also

you said your 5.1 is an academic copy so any one using it to make money would technically be illegal

it may not have been your specific question, but it was a question you should have been asking, and I assumed you had already read the box where it states that it’s a universal binary version … and it came out after the intel macs went on sale (but perhaps before your particular model went on sale)

It’s not illegal to make money with an academic version, however it is illegal to run it at all if you don’t qualify to use the academic version. You have to be either currently be a student or emplyee of a recognized academic institution to run it at all.

That is true. Academic versions are there to teach you. And lots of schools are now sending their graudating classes with Academic versions of Software to Intern (Both unpaid and PAID) to better grow their skills in the field and on their program.

That’s how it was when I graduated from design school.

BUT I also agree that if you are freelanceing/ out of school/ and making good cash, that you should follow the rules and buy a new Retail version for yourself. Plus in the long run the upgrades are much cheapier….

After reading the posts…

I have 5.1 and have upgraded to FCP 6 on my Mac Book Pro. So, yes it works. Plus, Rosetta is there if you just loaded it to try it out.

Actually, the moment you are out of school the academic version no longer applies to you. I know a few folks who got “incredible deals” on eBay for Final Cut Studio only to find out when it arrived it was the Academic version. So they got screwed when trying to upgrade it.

Stay legal and it all works out for the best in the long run.
