What a lot of sanctimonious whining.
I certainly have no ill will towards Steve Martin and / or Ripple Training, but as far as it goes all this is not much different to a bunch of long lens paparazzi shots of the set of a new much anticpated movie. Of interest to those who care (in this case including me) and a big fat so what for everyone else.

Bearing in mind that the lack of FCP XML import/export support is really at this stage only an “apparent” lack of FCP XML import/export support … still, its is a bit disturbing. At NAB just a year ago, Apple’s best effort was a presentation at the LAFCPUG Supermeet talking up the amazing 3rd party developer support it had going for it – and a whole heck of a lot of that support was dependent on the FCP XML interchange format. Got to wonder how FCP X will pass timelines to Resolve 8 etc if FCP XML goes bye bye. Then again, its all just late night blathering to me at this stage.

Technically its entirely possible for Apple to allow access to FCP X’s Core Data document(s), if that is indeed how the app is modeled … but who knows whether they will, or how easy they might make it that access if they do allow it, its entirely up to Apple and anyone who knows definitively is unable to say right now.

As someone happily living in the still developing world I’d have to say that Steve’s “it’s just a 4GB download, no bigger than an HD movie” (or words to that effect) was wholly typical of first world blinkered vision .. perhaps he genuinely has no idea how long a 4GB download takes on a supposedly 1Mb “broadband” line that can rarely sustain even half that speed and generally gets massively throttled if and when a large download is attempted? Well Steve, on the face of it it should probably take about 12 hours … but out here in the real world it would probably take about at least 3 or 4 time longer including multiple “resumes” after unexpectedly dropped connections (hope the AppStore will be ok with that). Now if I could pop in to an authorized Mac shop and buy a copy on disc then I certainly would (like the SL family pack I bough there last time) … but without that possibility then popping down to Petaling St and buying a knock-off copy starts looking like the best option. Here’s a thought … how about letting me pop into an authorized Mac shop with my laptop and download it over the air directly on the premises from a local cache? That would help me … but I’m still not getting how you plan to help those without the handy Mac shop … and those who’d consider themselves darn lucky to have a fancy 1Mb internet connection like me.

As of this moment, Blackmagic Design’s Media Express software looks pretty well positioned to be a good stand in if you need a tape based Log and Capture solution … specifically Media Express 3, which is expected to ship as a free update later this month … and with that in mind I’d suggest that the Blackmagic Decklink Studio option may be a wise choice – as far as I know, no other card vendor has yet announced such a feature rich log and capture solution.

Andreas raises a good point. I didn’t ask myself as am assuming you must have some kind of reason … but I’d still like to know 😉
Either way, there is obviously something amiss here. Question: Does this issue only happen with this specific project/sequence XML export or does it happen with any and every project and sequence XML export? e.g. If you create a new project, populate it with a few test clips, and then roundtrip through XML, do it all proceed as it should?Cheers

Well yes and no … even though mixing progressive and interlaced material in this fashion (in a progressive timeline for eventual psf/interlaced delivery) is straight forward enough, you need to realise that a) its really not a good look to intercut sources with differing temporal characters, its very jarring for the viewer, and b) you need to be careful how you handle/process your true interlaced media in a progressive timeline as any timeline processing will happen at a frame rather field level.
