Portent of things to come – huge downloads
Posted by Craig Seeman on June 6, 2011 at 7:06 pmApple announced at WWDC that Lion will be $29.99, apparently Mac App Store only purchase and a 4GB download.
So it may well be that FCPX is going to be a huge Mac App Store only download. If so, I pity the people who don’t have fast internet tubes. Of course maybe this becomes a thing VARs do for you.

June 6, 2011 at 8:41 pmThey were pretty clear in the sneak peek that it will only be on the app store I thought.

June 6, 2011 at 8:51 pmBut people were wondering if there would be a “breaking point” regarding file size.4GB is huge for people who have slow internet speeds. We now know that Apple believes 4GB download only is OK.
XCode in the Mac App Store is 4.25 GB and nearly half the ratings give it a single star because of download issues.
I love the Mac App Store but for a good part of the world large downloads are a major road block.
Even though iWork and iLife components are available in the Mac App Store you can still order them at the Apple Store online and have them shipped on disk. They are not Mac App Store only and I can’t imagine Apple not offering that option for other large download products.

June 6, 2011 at 9:07 pmWell, this complicates matters for shops like mine. We work in a beurocracy and procurement of things like software is built completely around hard copies that come thru the mail and can be put on a shelf. I don’t look forward to trying to explain the next upgrade is not represented by any physical object. This is like asking the kid behind the counter at McDonald’s for something he hasn;t got a pictogram-illustrated button for on the register.

June 6, 2011 at 9:12 pmMark, they’ll just have to create an iBox. You buy an empty box from the Apple Online Store and they ship it to you. It won’t cost much to ship because it’s empty but it does mean printing costs for Apple. Maybe it’ll just be a certificate of ownership with pictures of CDs on it.

June 6, 2011 at 11:48 pmCan’t see how an invoice/receipt wouldn’t do the job. You can’t really quantify cable TV or music you buy over the internet yet folks still somehow manage to adapt.

Maybe the certificate could be called iOwn. You could order them like an iPhoto photo album so it would come in a book that you could put on a shelf. -

June 7, 2011 at 12:46 amHi –
ok, so you just downloaded OS-X Lion, and you downloaded FCP-X.
And you paid for it with your iTunes account, etc. Now, your hard drive fails (because you were using a Seagate drive). NOW WHAT ?
Do you get a free download again (and again), because you have an
account with Apple ?I just did an install with OS X Server last week, and because I screwed up the DNS, and did not know how to get myself out of trouble, I wound up having to reinstall THREE times ! I am sure with my first round of OS X Lion Server, I will make mistakes – does this mean I will have to pay for it over and over until I get it right ?

June 7, 2011 at 12:50 amHey Bob- you can re-download apps you’ve already purchased on the Mac App Store for free:
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4461
If I have already downloaded an app from the Mac App Store, can I redownload it for free?
Yes. You can redownload apps from the Mac App Store as long as the app remains available. You may be asked to enter the Apple ID and password you initially used to download the app.

In your case Bob, the answer is yes, you’ll be penalized because your karma sucks. However, the rest of us will have our information stored on the Apple servers, and as with our iPhones, all legitimate iGoodies that we purchase from the iStore with our iMoney will essentially be available on an as needed basis with just our iPasswords and iUserIDs needed as Noah suggests above.

June 7, 2011 at 7:31 amIronically, we decided to move our office today. One of the reasons being – after we moved in we found out AT&T dsl is the only provider of service to our office. Of course, we live in Los Angeles county – it’s such an unpopulated area that we really shouldn’t expect more than .4 uploads and 2.3 download speed. Ah, country living!
