This is like shooting fish in a barrel … if I wanted to buy a PC workstation and based my research on trawling websites for disgruntled users with hardware issues then I’d never be able to buy anything with any peace of mind!

If I went to a systems integrator and told them what I wanted and had them configure it correctly for my needs, have them install it, test it and have a support contract in place then would I still be worried?

You say you are a professional and want to integrate a Mac Pro / FCP system in your shop, and I have no reason to doubt that … so why would you treat the Mac system any differently than your Avids?

well certainly the Air should be able to handily manage Log and Transfer via USB from your P2 device, but where are you going to plug your external HD in? I guess you could use a hub but that’ll slow down the transfer, plus your external would have to be double or triple interface ready or you’ll be stuck with your media on a USB drive.

go with the MacBook … its smaller than the Air although obviously not as thin, its only 2 lbs heavier, and the even the cheapest MacBook exceeds the Air in every specification including price. For field ops its likely far more rugged than the Air too, and like you said, “anything would be an upgrade”

First, I think folks missed the point of the Canopus purchase. Edius is moderatly interesting, but that’s all. They took it because it came for free.

Maybe so, but Thomson/GVG were at that time under contract to provide a craft editing solution to a relatively big client, something they’d failed to come up with and it was causing them some amount of grief … Edius swiftly became that craft edit solution. Whilst it’s not likely the major reason for acquisition of Canopus, it almost certainly played a part in the decision.

Other than that I’m in complete agreement with you Tim,, and thanks for the long and interesting post … something to mull over while we go about the business of our business today!

Any more educated speculation on the story with Thomson ?

Which makes plenty of sense except for the fact that they (Thomson) already did that when they acquired Canopus in Dec 2005 (including the Edius Broadcast NLE system) … and over the course of the following months were plenty of tall tales regarding roadmaps for integration with the Thomson/GVG broadcast and newsroom systems. Ha! Two years on and we’re all still waiting.

And so I find myself in a speculatory dilemma … whilst I hope and pray that Thomson does not ever hold the reins of FCP and the Apple Pro Apps in general, it would be just darn great to show that butt ugly Edius the door!

what version of FCP are you using? IMX support in FCP was introduced in version 5

press Option H, or choose Tools > Keyboard Layout > Customize
the Keyboard Layout window opens
click the padlock button at the bottom left of that window .. the message to the right of that button should then say “The keyboard layout is currently unlocked…”
then press the Reset… button
you get a warning dialog … click OK
close the eyboard Layout window

you should now have reverted to the default keyboard layout

No offense intended Ace … uncannily similar threads often crop up and so often they are just re posts and cross posts, it can get annoying when you’re trying to figure something out for the poster’s, and potentially your own, future benefit.

Regarding your how camera setup I’m afraid I don’t use the HVX200 so have no reference on specific operation controls … lots of users around here so you should get instructions soon
