working fine here Rafael … the Graphic Update is required if you have a newer MBP and a Matrox MXO. if you have any plans to use such a combo then you must do the update first.

you’ll ceratinly want one but given your formats (and budget) you probably don’t need one
obviously HDV you can capture via Firewire as native, AIC or ProRes
for capture from analog sources with RS422 control you’ll need a Canopus ADVC700 or similar

then again, if you have larger longer term ingest format goals especially of the SD-SDI and HD-SDI variety, then the Io HD may well be the better long term investment, its certainly a desirable box.

Everything Mark said, with bells on. Couldn’t agree more.
The codec is great. The full res native workflow with ProRes render is great, FCP cuts native XDCAM HD with ease.
The only issue is if you choose to deliver in a XDCAM HD too (or any other GOP based codec), thats when you’d hit the whole “conforming” bump in the road … but thats your choice, you don’t have to go that route.

An integrated low-res workflow would be great, AVID can do it, EDIUS can do it and not surprisingly, Sony’s own VEGAS can do it. It doesn’t seem likely that FCP will ever offer such a workflow so I wouldn’t hold your breath on that one … but Sony could easily allow third parties to enable such a workflow if they opened up their XDCAM Transfer software to allow import of logging lists, wish they would.

That may have been true went you bought last month Kevin, but as off a week or so ago the 17″ MBP also offers an LED-backlit 1920 x 1200 high-resolution display.

Apple mouse driver doesn’t support it directly but you can install and use a third party mouse driver to add such support.

if you are running 10.5 (Leopard) then you need to upgrade to XDCAM Transfer 2.5.1 … then you’ll get the disc back in the Finder

i’ve a feeling you have a long night ahead .. however you may want to try this method first:
export your NTSC sequence as an XML file
then reimport that XML file, and in the import options set the default to DV PAL and uncheck the Override with settings from XML option
open the newly created sequence into the timeline, select all the clips contained, and press command option v and remove the Distort attributes.

this may get you no further than the copy and paste method but is worth a shot I should think as it will take only a minute to test

You might want to consider meeting them half way. Instead of sub-clipping, why not just use clip markers? As you know, if you use a marker to note the points of interest in each clip then that marked up clip displays a disclosure triangle in the browser, which you can then twiddle open to display a list of all those markers. Double clicking the marker opens the clip with the playhead at the marker position, so you ‘re then getting the benefit of discrete access to different points within the clip whilst maintaining the single master clip relationship.

EDIT: and then again maybe you’re not! I just tested this and it seems that using markers is exactly the same as sub-clipping. Double clicking a marker just loads a subclip into the viewer … there was me thinking that the subclip was not created until you specifically dragged the marker into the browser as a separate item. Move along, nothing to see here.

I’ve worked with FCP on both the 1920×1200 and 1680×1050 … for me, the HD screen wins hands down. When you’re working FCP on a single screen system any additional screen real estate is welcome.

Within FCP you might want to set the Browser Text Size to Medium or Large
In the Finder you might want to set set your View Options to larger Icon and Text sizes
