    Hi everyone

Buying a new macbook pro and will do a little editing on it with the FCP suite. I do have mac pro work station in the studio.

What do people suggest I buy in the macbook pro range? why?

Do I really need a 7200 rpm hard drive and high res 17′ monitor or is standard 17′ fine and 5200 rpm fine with external hard drive?

what should I buy? what is unnecessary?

i am planning on buying maximum ram 4gb for the macbook pro.

    Cheers

    Hi Ham,
I think that 5200 rpms for the internal HD is OK (To run the System and the application. For the externals with the footage 7200 off course). 4Gb RAM is enough for FCS2. And about the screen, pick the high resolution one.

I also am planing on getting a MBP. I am definitely getting the 17″ High-Res, it has some sweet screen real-estate. I just haven’t decided on mat or glossy yet.

5400rpm is fine for the system drive, I myself plan on using a eSATA for my media drives. You are already planning on getting 4GB of ram so that is perfect.

[Zane Barker] “I am definitely getting the 17” High-Res, it has some sweet screen real-estate. I just haven’t decided on mat or glossy yet. “

I just bought the MBP 15″ this past month, and it’s lovely. I didn’t get the glossy screen, and opted out of the larger real-estate because of two things, which may or may not apply to anyone reading this, but seem to apply here.

I have a G5 editing bay for day to day stuff. I use the MBP for client meetings, travel shoots, and when I want to edit someplace other than my basement office. Since I have the 30″ monitor on the desk, I can deal with the 15″ on my laptop as I cruise free from it.

The bigger reason, tho, is that the 15″ uses an LED backlight, where the 17 still uses a CCFL (fluorescent bulb) backlight that is neither as bright or as even after a few year’s use. My old 17″ PB has faded corners. Ugh.

So, if you’ve got a desktop and the MBP is for mobility, you might go with the 15. If you are using it as your primary editing system, you could choose either, but if you’re doing a lot of Color or Motion, the 15 is what I’d choose. After all, they both can power the 30″ Cinema Display, so …

    kev~!

Not any more the new 17″ that were just released last week have LED back light, even the high res version now how the LED backlight.

That may have been true went you bought last month Kevin, but as off a week or so ago the 17″ MBP also offers an LED-backlit 1920 x 1200 high-resolution display.

edit: sorry Zane … didn’t see your post there!

Thanks for the advise everyone I really appreciate it.

I’m still a bit unsure about the 7200 rpm hard drive or 5400rpm.

I will capture to the internal drive at times when on the road for short jobs in HDV.

    Should I go 7200 rpm..help….I’m confused…what will I loose? gain?

Also how good is the new high res 17″…really worth it for motion? do you notice the gain in res?

    Thanks

I am also considering a new MacBook 17 inch hi-res screen but cannot decide on if i should get the glossy option or not?

I will use the Macbook for location downloading from EX1 onto internal hard drives, external hard drives and if away a long time onto Blue Ray discs. When away a long time (I can be away from my studio for weeks), I will also do some basic editing on the laptop – so glossy or not?

It is a personal choice between mat and glossy Paul. I choose glossy only after playing the same video back side by side on a mat and on a glossy computer.

Also keep in mind that if your local Apple store does not have your choice in stock, it is a three week wait to have it ship. (I found that out when I ordered mine this week)

    Hi

I have heard that matte high res screens are better for color correction.

I went with the BTO 17′ inch with high res matte screen and 7200 rpm drives for better capture on field for temp storage and capture.

I was prepared to wait 3 weeks to have a better field editing machine.

    Hope this helps
