  • Free Form Masking in FCP?

Posted by Michael Garske on February 7, 2008 at 4:05 am

Hi again. I may be in the wrong forum for this maybe someone can tell me. I use to edit a bit with Vegas & that program had a pen tool that you could use to mask off portions of an image.

Does the FCP suite have something similar to this (perhaps in Motion if not FCP)? Any steps that aren’t obvious for use of the tool? And is there an equivalence to a ‘magnetic lasso’ tool to help make selection easier?

FCPs mask tool is Motion. I don’t think it has a magnetic lasso, but it does have roto bezier.

There is an eight-point garbage matte in FCP, but it works by dragging the eight points to different positions on the screen. It’s fine for simple work.

Motion has a mask pen tool that lets you draw masks and animate them with precision.

    All the best,

    Tom

there’s also a free 50 point bezier matte plugin that you can download and add to FCP. enable as many points as you need https://homepage.mac.com/tomhenderson/beziermatte/

or another plugin solution may be Lyrics Final Cut Effects plugins which offer a collection Masking and Matte tools https://www.lyric.com/fcp-plugins/index.htm
