sounds to me like you’re working in HDV

HDV reference movies work just like any other but your timeline really has to be rendered … not just playable in realtime. what I mean is that when you choose Render > All it still will only render those sections of the timeline that it feels it needs to render according to the settings you have specified in your Sequence > Render menu …

check your settings … for HDV you would need to force it to render any part of the timeline regardless of whether you have done anything other than trimmed and placed it in the timeline … check that all options including the “Full” option is checked. this means it will render items even if they can already be played back in realtime in full quality.

now try the render again .. see if it finds something to render this time. then export a reference movie … viola. (but be careful, it is referencing the render files. lose/delete them and your movie is unplayable)

Cmd-Opt-F to load a copy of the source clip into the Viewer
then Cmd-J to open the speed dialog where you can type in whatever speed you want it to be
finally F11 to replace the timeline instance with the speed adjusted copy

It’s a quick, simple and effective workaround albeit not the answer you wanted

That said, I agree wholeheartedly … logic be damned – the lack of ability to simply tick an option in the Speed dialog to “Preserve timeline duration” is very frustrating. Similarly, there should be an option to not preserve duration when handling variable speed adjustments.

I’d urge you to pop over to the FCP Feedback page and post a polite request for these options and any others you’d like to see implemented.

it depends on how it will be broadcast and what kind of master you want to make

are you working with HD or anamorphic SD sources?
if HD do you want an HD master?
if SD do you want a 16:9 anamorphic master?
will it be broadcast letterboxed or pan and scan / center cut ?
if the latter will it be 14:9 center cut, or 4:3 center cut?

I’m guessing your DVD player is not controllable … did you set it as an uncontrollable device?
If not, FCP will be looking for and expecting to find some timecode.

Not meaning to be picky for picky’s sake here Walter but thats not altogether correct … 14:9 safe areas and a 4:3 safe areas (within a 16:9 frame) are not the same at all.

A 14:9 safe guide will show you what will be safe with regards to a 14:9 center cut (ie shows transmitted in 4:3 with a viewable picture area cropped to 14:9 and a shallow letterbox top and bottom to make up the full raster height)

If you need to make your titles / action safe for a full 4:3 center cut (ie shows transmitted in 4:3 with a viewable picture area cropped to 14:3) then you need to specifically use a 4:3 safe guide (not 14:9)

I realise you know this but just wanted to post it for clarity to others who may be less familiar and easily confused

anyone making the mistake of backing up only the raw clips instead of the full folder structure is in pretty good company tho Rafael, seems to be an easy mistake with everyone and there brother doing it!

I like your backup method, its good thinking and sounds pretty robust, only it assumes you convert all your files which sometimes isn’t the case … now, what’d be really nice is if Apple started supporting these container formats natively in QT instead of needing a rewrap … but thats just me pipe dreaming

yikes .. painful way to learn the lesson, you gotta keep the folder structure intact in this brave new tapeless world.

hopefully Craig’s/Rafael’s tip will get you out of trouble … another trick posted over at the Apple Discussions seems to be to substitute these clips source clips into a completely different but valid BPAV folder structure and simply make sure the substituted clips are renamed as for the clip they replace. haven’t tried this (not an EX guy) but it could be a pretty nifty solution if it works
