A couple of options would be to do a simple center cut by exporting via compressor, or by dropping the master sequence into a 4:3 timeline in FCP and blowing up to remove the letterbox
If you didn’t shoot with 4:3 delivery in mind (or even if you did) you might want to reframe the shots beforehand.

For what its worth, actually FCP 6 does support direct import use VOB files, but as usual with multiplexed files in FCP, you won’t get audio, and though I’ve never tried it it would likely be hopelessly slow and painful to work with so not sure why anybody would want to.

Well you can transcode to an edit format using MPEG Streamclip … but I rather thought the point was that you wanted to prep files for delivery to clients using AVID and GVG systems, not FCP.

In the for what its worth category, the newest version of Compressor (v3) adds presets for MPEG Transport and Program Streams so no specific need to go into the Extra’s tab ….. also in the for what its worth category, for anyone with the previous version of Compressor, the option for creating a transport stream is available in this version too, just as Matt describes above.

Ripping the already compressed dvd copy of the video to an MP4 then transcoding yet again to DV or other format on top of that is just degrading the image more and more. If you can’t get access to the original footage then instead of using MacTheRipper / Handbrake or whatever to rip the VOB to an MP4 first, just download and use the free MPEG Streamclip application to transcode the file directly from your friend’s DVD to a DV-NTSC file that you can edit with easily.
If transcoding is really what you want to do though, then you can use Compressor or Quicktime Player (or MPEG Streamclip) to transcode the file.

Apple have there own VIgnette filter these days (in the Stylize group)
There is a Region Tint and Blur filter here you can use too, a little blur added under the edge tint can produce quite a nice vignette effect -
try the AUBandPass filter

or you could download and use Avid’s QT codec bundle … one of their codecs might make an acceptable graphics interchange format and I beleive pretty much all of their codec’s have alpha support, even the Avid DV codec
