Text Tool crashing FCP 6.0.4
Posted by Walter Biscardi on August 26, 2008 at 1:09 amSo anyone else have this new feature from Apple’s updates?
Select the Text Tool in the Viewer.
Click the “Control” Tab.
Watch FCP disappear.
I’ve trashed the prefs four times, repaired disk permissions four times, trashed the FCP prefs four times.
thought it might be a corrupt font, but Boris Title 3D works just fine. And we haven’t changed anything on this machine except running the latest updates from Apple last week.

August 26, 2008 at 8:37 amHave you added any fonts lately?
I had a problem with Boris which perplexed me until I took all the fonts out and carefully replaced them.
I never did nail it down but at least it’s working again.

Nope, haven’t touched anything on this except updating the Studio package.
I guess I should ask, anyone running 6.0.4 on the OctoCore 3.2 and having this issue? The more I learn about this machine, the more I find out it has issues more unique than any other machine out there. Our G5 Quad 2.5 is running FCP 6.0.4 just fine.

August 26, 2008 at 1:47 pmAn interesting update to this. Even though I have my Font Book set up to only have about 200 fonts activated, all 1800 fonts on the OctoCore are still active and running.
Our other two workstations are working normally, that is whatever fonts are turned ON in the Font Book are the fonts that are active and available for the apps. On the OctoCore, I can’t seem to turn off any fonts period. Probably related to this issue.

August 26, 2008 at 4:52 pmI’ll second that. The Octo machines are a breed unto themselves. We have had a series of issues that did not plague any other machines. I can also tell you that the 2007 8-core did not have the issues that we were experiencing with our 2008 models, which made troubleshooting difficult, since most of the vendors were testing on the 2007 model.
I intentionally did not install 6.0.4 or 10.4.5 on the Octo… it’s on everything else. So, unfortunately, I can’t confirm or deny it for you. However, given your fontbook info, I’m going to check the octo. If it’s doing that as ell, perhaps that was our problem as well.

Let me know if FontBook is behaving the same on yours too, I’d be curious.

Much appreciated. We’re on the 3.2 Octo, I’ll definitely have to dig some more when I get some time.

When I diagnosed my problem I manually pulled the fonts and gradually put them back in. It was a crude emulation of what a diagnostic utility used to do back when Mac was run by System 7.
Good luck with finding the trouble source. Can’t have “Good Eats” held up by a rogue font!
