You don;t want/need Clip Browser, instead try using Sony’s XDCAM Transfer Tool, which works back as far as FCP 5.1.2 for XDCAM HD (thats when the XDCAM HD codec was intro’d to FCP) and the app runs fine on older Macs too. Once you have the MXF files imported and rewrapped as .MOV’s then you can use FCP, Compressor, Episode, MPEG Streamclip or any other suitable app to convert those files to whichever target codec you need.

Easiest is to download and use the helper app linked above…

Quit FCP, then launch Preference Manager and press the Quick Trash button at lower left of the main window. Now reopen FCP and all will be back to factory default.

1. Is the rewrap solution true, won’t the underlying codec still be apple’s quicktime codec? (I’ve heard transfer out to mxf files, but even so, won’t they still have the same underlying apple codec? if not, praises be.)

Its true. The import is a simple rewrap of the “essence”, only the container changes, not the content.

2. If the rewrap will work, how do we do that? We can download XDCam EX Log and Transfer utility, and the XDCam Transfer Tool, what is the exact settings/process/output supposed to be set to within FCP?

You need to download and install Sony’s XDCAM Transfer Tool (PDZK-P1). Once you have installed that app then you’ll find a new Sony XDCAM export option in FCP’s File > Export submenu. You can use that to export clips or sequences as xdcam native MXF or MP4 movies … either format “should” work directly in Premiere but I have read that MXF support is more stable.

3. What should I rewrap them to? The footage is 720p24 EX footage in the .mov wrapper (if I’m correct, if not please set me straight). Can it be output as an mp4 mxf? or are those two things different wrappers and what are the correct codecs supposed to be? How should that end file read – an mxf file encoded as an mp4? an mxf file as an EX___ codec? an mp4 as something?

Export as MXF as suggested above.

Its not a bug so much as its a lack of a feature ;-). When you create a setup it is written into your preferences file and there’s currently no way to effectively remove them thereafter other than by trashing your preferences and starting again. Why not drop a note to Apple’s FCP via their feedback page and ask for a means to manage the Easy Setups much as one can manage the other settings presets? There is a feature request for this submitted already but such requests carry more weight the more that folks ask for it.

In the meantime, as noted, you can trash your preferences and start over and/or manage preference sets through the use of invaluable apps like Jon Chappel’s superb FCS Preferences Manager, now at version 2.0.1 and getting better al the time:

Michael, they don’t have a ProRes HQ algorithm, the coding/decoding is handled by the host computer.

its also due to the nature of its communication process as a keystroke sender … those keystrokes will tend to be buffered by the OS which will continue to feed them to the app after you’ve stopped

It records natively to .MOV format on SDHC cards Rafael, but can also record to .MP4 if recording using the optional SxS Media Recorder.

All LaCie’s 2.5″ portable drive options are pretty solid … don’t suffer from the same issues / reputation of their larger 3.5″ based brothers. That said, the big orange bumper is a big orange gimmick … I ‘ve not found them to be any more or less rugged than any other 2.5″ based portable drive.
