  • Preserve CC data with MXO2

The new software release for MXO2 can preserve closed captioning data from HD-SDI. For repackaging HD content this is a great little feature. Wonder if they could add the ability to insert CC into an HD show? Then you really have something. Wouldn’t mind keeping that service in house instead of sending it out.

You can do that now: I know it works on AJA & BMD Cards, but there is no
reason it should not work on the MXO Line.

    check out the NLE options.

    works great!

Does not work in HD on AJA cards because the CC is not in the active video. Works in uncompressed SD only.

Doesn’t work for AJA Kona yet. CPC is working closely with AJA (as they did with Matrox) to have the VANC in HD and VBI in SD pass-through (already allowed by AJA with Kona software upgrade 6.0.3).

At NAB, a representative form AJA stated that they are in the final testing phases with CPC to finalize a HD CC solution.

My only grip about the MXO2 is that it only supports 8 channels of embedded audio.

My only grip about AJA Kona, no VANC pass through, yet.

I can’t wait for the update from AJA to be able to pass-through HD CC’s!

That’s interesting, like to see what they come up with. Still would like to have the ability to insert CC into HD myself. All current solutions are too expensive so we always send it out. Wouldn’t mind being able to charge for that service…

    Hey Tony,

You can already do that with the Matrox MXO2!

We are currently testing it for some of our workflows and it can capture CC’s (HD and SD). It can also output CC’s via FCP sequence! It is an AWESOME FEATURE!

However, if you receive CC files in the form of .scc, .sami, .cap, etc. you will need to use a application developed my CPC called Mac Captions. You then take your CC file and Mac Captions will export the required file to play out via FCP sequence.

Check it out. All the claims are true and we use the Evertz to verify CC;s for HD and SD. Works like a charm!

Our facility as invested a lot of money on AJA Kona cards however, so once AJA releases their update to support CC pass-through, we will be all over that.

One of my inquiries with Matrox however was how they develop their ProRes HQ algorithm? Did they work in conjunction with Apple how AJA did? Do they just piggyback off FCS’s CODECs?

They could not give me a definitive answer, so that worries me. That’s another reason why we want to wait for AJA. In the meantime, we bought 1 MXO2 and so far I’m impressed, except for my unanswered questions…

    We’ll see…

Michael, they don’t have a ProRes HQ algorithm, the coding/decoding is handled by the host computer.

Ah, ok! That would answer why they didn’t answer my inquiry.

Well then I will wait for the AJA update to handle HD/SD CC…

    Best!

    Hi Michael,

“Ah, ok! That would answer why they didn’t answer my inquiry.”

Sorry about the lack of response, not sure which inquiry you are referring to, if it is the one in this thread, I would simply chalk it up to timing, NAB has sucked up a lot of resources, so forum posting has slowed down :[

Let us be clear, yes we use FCP’s CODECs and we make no qualms about it! We see no reason to develop our own flavour to imitate what Apple has already perfected. There is no reason to believe that AJA’a version of ProRes is better the Apple’s original version. One could argue that CPU cycles used for this process are not being used for editing. Yes, it does take CPU resources, but we believe that during ingest/capture, there is typically not much editing going on. As an added benefit, unlike some similar products, the MXO2 does not lock you to one codec, like ProRes for example. There is nothing wrong with ProRes, however, some creative professionals have bought into other CODECs for their workflows like DVCProHD and XDCAM HD/EX. MXO2 works with all of them as well. I guess my point here is that using host CODECs is not a disadvantage; we see it as a PRO. Most editor’s paid good money for their systems, why not use them, and save money on equipment options at the same time? This is exactly what the MXO2 does; complete I/O at an aggressive price.

In regards to the CC feature, it may be better if we elaborate a little. The MXO2 feature is more than just CC pass-through. Sure we can capture and playback. What we can also do is allow the editor to cut, trim for time, and modify the video clip in ANY way, and still maintain the CC data. This patent pending technology really changes the way editors work with CC data.

Matrox is committed to leading the way for quality I/O solutions, constantly thinking different. AJA is also a quality product, so I think it makes sense that they would also try and match this Matrox feature. It will be interesting to see how and when.

I hope this helps clarify the MXO2 feature set a little. Again, sorry for the delay, NAB is always a rough period 😉

    Best Regards,
    Chris
