in terms of big houses switching…this is a huge issue….i’m working with a major government agency evaluating every NLE out there now (AVID, FCP X, Premiere Pro CC) They must interface with an old server that doesn’t easily connect to two of the three NLE’s —
They don’t have the training time or money to push a square peg into a round hole….nor the resources to let everyone chose their own flavor…that’s why they are doing extensive, real world testing with all the NLE’s to see which creates the least pain and most gain in the transition.
That is why you “hear” about various organizations getting x copies of FCP X or Y copies of Premiere Pro — they have to license and evaluate the products with real world deadlines for a period of time to make sure they suffer zero downtime using them to get on the air.

not hard to change something midstream – in timeline – control or right click on the audio….and then select audio channels – you can re-assign left and right to whatever side you want or make them duo mono –

Premiere Pro CC has saved us a tremendous amount of time and is a virtually pain-free switch from FCP7….we now do all our lower thirds and title work in After Effects (as we did with LiveType and Motion) ..make a change there – shows up here…. Same with Photoshop and Audition. But the hands down best feature (well two) is no rendering till you’re done (unless you’d like to) and choosing FCP7 or AVID keyboard shortcuts – years of muscle memory remain useful.
We just cut three full news programs at a Las Vegas Convention – delivered to DVD and Web playback…mobile device version as well – quick and painless…even when they needed changes after approving show – quick fix and re-render out to all three platforms.
Major difference is color correction – once you get used to the Fast Color Corrector and it’s input and output levels sliders, it’s actually more intuitive and useful than FCP’s three way CC….use and set up work spaces for quicker editing and CC and you’ll be more efficient.

Actually someone has taken the FCP 7 model and improved it – it’s called Premiere Pro CC – try it – you’ll feel very comfortable…

Back to your original question before the answers drove off the Mac Pro cliff. Are you fast, skilled and comfortable in FCP7. If so, X will frustrate you at first until you unlearn a lot of ingrained habits. You might want to take Abobe Premier CC out for a 30 day free spin as well. If familiarity, comfort and speed are what you are looking for. It may be a great fit. It has been for us.
